Indonesia, 29 August, 2025 – On the afternoon of August 29, the Vietnam U16 women’s team claimed a hard-fought bronze medal at the AFF U16 Women’s Championship 2025 after defeating hosts Indonesia in a dramatic penalty shootout at Manahan Stadium.
Vietnam started the third-place playoff in perfect fashion, immediately pushing high up the pitch to apply pressure on the home side. The breakthrough came almost instantly. In just the second minute, forward Ngoc Anh unleashed a strike from the edge of the box. The shot took a wicked deflection off an Indonesian defender, wrong-footing the goalkeeper and rolling straight into the net to give Vietnam an early 1-0 lead.
The early setback spurred Indonesia into action. Backed by passionate home supporters, the hosts gradually regained their composure and began to dictate the tempo. Their persistence was rewarded in the 16th minute when Vietnam’s defense failed to clear the ball effectively. Nori pounced on the loose ball and fired an accurate shot past the Vietnamese keeper, restoring parity at 1-1.
The remainder of the first half saw both teams trade possession in the midfield without creating clear chances. After the break, the match developed into an exciting end-to-end battle as both sides sought to take control. Vietnam relied on quick counterattacks, while Indonesia pressed aggressively to exploit their physical strength. Despite the intensity, fatigue became a factor in the closing stages, leading to sloppy finishing and wasted opportunities from both sides.
After 90 minutes of regulation, the score remained locked at 1-1, sending the contest to a tense penalty shootout. The spot-kick drama showcased the mental strength and resilience of the young Vietnamese players. Holding their nerve under pressure, Vietnam converted their chances more effectively than Indonesia, edging out the hosts in a nail-biting 7-6 shootout win.
The victory secured a bronze medal finish for coach Okiyama Masahiko and his squad, marking a rewarding end to their journey in the regional tournament. The players displayed determination and fighting spirit throughout the campaign, with the final match epitomizing their resilience under challenging circumstances.
While Vietnam fell short of reaching the final, the third-place finish is seen as a valuable step forward for the nation’s youth development program. Competing against tough opponents in Southeast Asia not only provided experience but also highlighted the potential of the next generation of Vietnamese women’s footballers.
With the bronze medal achievement, Vietnam U16 women’s team can take pride in their progress, gaining both confidence and international exposure as they continue to build towards future continental competitions.
