Pham Hai Yen helps Hanoi women’s team take temporary lead in national league

Hanoi, 18 September, 2025 – Striker Pham Hai Yen scored a decisive goal as Hanoi secured a 2-0 victory over Ho Chi Minh City II in the opening fixture of Round 4 at the National Women’s Football Championship – Thai Son Bac Cup 2025. The result allowed Hanoi to climb to the top of the standings, at least temporarily, ahead of reigning champions Ho Chi Minh City I.

From the opening whistle, Hanoi entered the match with determination, fully aware that coach Luu Ngoc Mai’s Ho Chi Minh City II side would likely adopt a defensive approach. As expected, the visitors sat deep throughout the first half, retreating into the final third to frustrate Hanoi’s attacking play.

Heavy rain in the capital further complicated the match, with waterlogged patches on the pitch disrupting ball movement. One of the clearest opportunities slipped away in the 32nd minute, when Hai Yen found herself in space outside the penalty area. However, her attempt to strike the ball was hindered as it stopped dead in a puddle, allowing the defense to clear.

Despite these setbacks, Hanoi’s relentless pressure finally broke through in the 39th minute. A defensive mix-up from Ho Chi Minh City II created chaos in the box, and midfielder Thuy Nhi reacted quickest, slotting home to open the scoring for the home side.

Hanoi carried their momentum into the second half and continued to dictate the pace of the game. In the 60th minute, they doubled their advantage. From a cross on the right wing, Hai Yen rose above the defense to head on target. Goalkeeper Kieu My parried the effort, but the experienced striker pounced on the rebound, firing into the net to secure a two-goal cushion.

Holding a comfortable lead, Hanoi slowed the tempo to conserve energy. However, they nearly paid the price in the 79th minute when Kieu Nghi broke free behind the defense. Her shot rolled just wide of the far post, sparing the home side from a late scare. Ultimately, Hanoi held firm until the final whistle to record a professional and deserved 2-0 victory.

The result temporarily lifted Hanoi to the summit of the table. Their grip on first place may be short-lived, though, as defending champions Ho Chi Minh City I are set to play on September 18. Should they claim three points, they will regain the lead in the title race.

For now, Hanoi can celebrate a hard-fought win, highlighted by Hai Yen’s continued influence in attack and Thuy Nhi’s timely breakthrough. The victory also underlines the team’s growing momentum as the season progresses and the competition for the top spot intensifies.
