U22 Vietnam enjoy a special gift from coach Kim Sang Sik

Bangkok, 5 December 2025 – Coach Kim Sang Sik granted U22 Vietnam a full day off on 5 December, allowing the squad to recharge following their hard-fought 2–1 victory over U22 Laos in the SEA Games 33 opener.

U22 Vietnam received an unexpected but welcome change to their schedule on 5 December, as head coach Kim Sang Sik decided to give the entire team a full rest day. The decision came less than 48 hours after the team defeated U22 Laos 2–1 in their first match of Group B at SEA Games 33, a result that required considerable physical effort despite Vietnam’s overwhelming control of the match.

During the afternoon session on 4 December, the coaching staff had already reduced training intensity to help the players recover. Those who started against Laos were assigned light recovery exercises and stretching routines, while the substitutes worked on attacking combinations and finishing drills. Improving final-third efficiency remains a key priority, especially after the team produced numerous scoring chances against Laos but converted only two.

One concern from the opening match was the minor injury to midfielder Nguyen Xuan Bac, who was substituted early due to discomfort. On 4 December, he stayed at the hotel for gym work and treatment instead of joining the field session. According to the medical team, Xuan Bac is expected to return to full training within two to three days, meaning he remains on track to start in the crucial match against U22 Malaysia on 11 December.

With nearly a full week to prepare for the decisive second group-stage match, Coach Kim’s decision to allow the team to “switch off” for a day is considered both timely and reasonable. The break not only aids physical recovery but also helps players reset mentally after a tense opening match. Additionally, U22 Vietnam will have the opportunity to support the women’s national team as they begin their SEA Games 33 campaign against Malaysia in Chonburi.

On 6 December, Coach Kim and his assistants will travel to Rajamangala Stadium to watch U22 Malaysia face U22 Laos. The scouting trip will help the coaching staff refine Vietnam’s tactical plan, particularly in improving composure and decision-making in the final moments of attacking sequences. With a win over Malaysia likely securing a spot in the semifinals, every detail counts as U22 Vietnam continues its pursuit of a place among the top four of SEA Games 33.
