Vietnam women’s team slip into difficult position after late defeat

Chonburi, 8 December 2025 – A late goal condemned Vietnam to a painful 0-1 loss against the Philippines, putting coach Mai Duc Chung’s side at a disadvantage in the race for a semifinal berth at SEA Games 33.

Vietnam’s hopes of progressing at SEA Games 33 suffered a major setback after a late defeat to the Philippines left the defending champions facing an uphill battle in Group B. The current standings show Vietnam at a disadvantage, despite being level on points with the Philippines, due to the head-to-head rule.

Entering the match, coach Mai Duc Chung deployed a line-up built on strength, speed and pressing ability. The wings were entrusted to Thanh Nha, Van Su and Bich Thuy — all players known for their pace and ability to create danger with direct runs and sharp finishing. This approach proved effective early on, as Vietnam controlled possession and dictated the tempo. Captain Hai Yen and her teammates frequently threatened the Philippines’ goal with long-range efforts and quick combination play.

Facing an opponent with superior physical build, Vietnam relied on rapid short passes and quick transitions to bypass the Philippines’ defensive lines. This style created clear discomfort for the opposition, who struggled to contain Vietnam’s movements in tight spaces. In midfield, Vietnam pressed aggressively, exploiting the visiting players’ limited technical ability under pressure. The team also worked hard to shut down the flanks, preventing the Philippines from making use of their height advantage through aerial crosses.

Throughout the match, Vietnam played with confidence, consistency and attacking intent. They continuously applied pressure, launched multiple shots on goal and maintained control for long stretches. However, the decisive factor behind the loss was a recurring issue — lack of precision in the final action. Several promising situations went unfinished, leaving coach Chung’s side unable to break the deadlock.

Conceding in the final minutes proved costly, as the 0-1 defeat now puts Vietnam in a difficult situation. Due to head-to-head criteria, Vietnam currently sit third in Group B despite being equal on points with the Philippines. Their path to the semifinals is narrow: Vietnam must defeat Myanmar by at least a two-goal margin in the final group match.

It is a demanding task given Myanmar’s form. The group leaders opened their campaign with an impressive 2-1 win over the Philippines and have shown strong defensive organisation and resilience. Still, Vietnam are no strangers to pressure situations in regional tournaments, and the final group match will be a true test of composure, determination and finishing efficiency.

Victory alone will not be enough — Vietnam must win convincingly to keep their bid for a fifth straight SEA Games gold alive.
