Vietnam add more gold medals as Pencak Silat and Wrestling shine at SEA Games 33

Bangkok, 17 December 2025 – Vietnamese athletes continued their strong medal push on the afternoon of December 17, as pencak silat and wrestling delivered a series of crucial gold medals for the Vietnam sports delegation at SEA Games 33.

In pencak silat, Tran Duy Tuyen once again proved his class by successfully defending his SEA Games title in the men’s 90kg category. The reigning champion dominated the final, overpowering Sheik Ferdous Bin Sheik Alauddin of Singapore with a convincing 26–5 victory. The win crowned Duy Tuyen as SEA Games 33 champion and marked his second consecutive gold medal at the regional Games, following his triumph at SEA Games 32 in 2023. His performance reaffirmed Vietnam’s strength in pencak silat, a discipline in which the country has consistently produced elite fighters.

Vietnam’s success in pencak silat did not stop there. Nguyen Tan Sang also stepped onto the top of the podium after claiming the gold medal in the men’s 80kg category. Like Duy Tuyen, Tan Sang is no stranger to SEA Games success, having previously won gold at SEA Games 32. Their back-to-back titles across two editions of the Games underlined the stability and depth of Vietnam’s pencak silat program, as well as the athletes’ ability to perform under pressure on the biggest regional stage.

Alongside pencak silat, Vietnam’s wrestling team enjoyed an outstanding afternoon, particularly in the Greco-Roman events. The wrestlers delivered exactly what the coaching staff had hoped for, securing multiple gold medals in decisive fashion. Nguyen Cong Manh claimed the championship in the men’s 77kg category, showing superior technique and composure in the final. In the 87kg division, Nghiem Dinh Hieu outclassed his opponents to take gold, while Nguyen Minh Hieu followed suit in the men’s 97kg category, completing a hat-trick of Greco-Roman titles for Vietnam.

Wrestling at SEA Games 33 features a total of 12 gold medals across men’s Greco-Roman, men’s freestyle, and women’s freestyle disciplines, with four weight categories in each style. The Vietnamese wrestling team entered the Games with a clear target of winning six gold medals, and the strong results on December 17 significantly boosted their chances of meeting that objective. The early success in Greco-Roman wrestling not only strengthened Vietnam’s medal tally but also provided valuable momentum for the remaining events.

With these gold medals from pencak silat and wrestling, Vietnam continued to reinforce its position among the leading nations at SEA Games 33. The performances highlighted the country’s strength in combat sports and reflected the long-term investment in athlete development, competition experience, and technical preparation. As the Games move toward their conclusion, Vietnam’s delegation remains firmly focused on maintaining consistency and converting further opportunities into gold.
