Thailand,11 April 2026 – Vietnam U20 women’s team were defeated 0-4 by Japan U20 women, ending their journey in the quarterfinals of the 2026 AFC U20 Women’s Asian Cup.
Before the match, Vietnam were considered clear underdogs against Japan, who not only possessed superior quality but were also led by experienced coach Akira Ijiri, a familiar figure in youth women’s football.
Vietnam approached the game with a defensive 5-4-1 formation, with Thanh Hieu as the lone striker. Coach Okiyama Masahiko and his players performed well in the opening 10 minutes, successfully neutralizing most of Japan’s attacking combinations.
However, once Japan adjusted their approach, Vietnam conceded the opening goal. From a corner kick, Itamura controlled the ball and fired into the top corner to give Japan the lead.
The hot weather slowed Japan’s tempo afterward, allowing Vietnam to push forward on a few occasions. However, Thanh Hieu was isolated up front and unable to convert those opportunities.
Toward the end of the first half, Japan accelerated and scored twice in added time. Tago netted from a central attack before Fukushima headed home to make it 3-0.
In the second half, Japan gradually substituted key players, yet Vietnam still failed to create any meaningful chances. Japan added a fourth goal in the 61st minute, with Itamura finishing comfortably.
At full time, Japan secured a 4-0 victory, advancing to the semifinals and booking a place at the 2026 FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup. Vietnam bowed out in the quarterfinals, having effectively met their pre-tournament objectives.
