Vietnam women’s volleyball team fall in the AVC Cup 2026 semi-finals

Philippines, 14 June 2026 – Vietnam Women’s National Volleyball Team saw their reign as AVC Cup champions come to an end after suffering a straight-sets defeat to South Korea Women’s National Volleyball Team in the semifinals of the 2026 AVC Cup on June 13.

The highly anticipated clash attracted significant attention from volleyball fans, as recent meetings between the two teams had produced memorable battles, including a historic victory for Vietnam under coach Nguyen Tuan Kiet. However, South Korea entered this encounter in impressive form and proved why they remain one of Asia’s strongest sides.

Vietnam fielded their strongest available lineup, with setter Vo Thi Kim Thoa orchestrating the attack, while Vi Thi Nhu Quynh and Dinh Thi Thuy led the offense from the wings. Team captain Tran Thi Thanh Thuy played in the opposite hitter position, supported by middle blockers Tran Thi Bich Thuy and Le Nhu Anh.

The opening set was closely contested, but South Korea gradually gained the upper hand thanks to their disciplined blocking system and efficient attacking combinations. Vietnam struggled to break through the Korean defense and eventually dropped the set 20-25.

The second set followed a similar pattern. South Korea maintained their intensity and continued to pressure Vietnam with powerful and well-structured attacks. Despite several spirited rallies, Vietnam found it difficult to contain their opponents and fell 19-25.

Facing elimination, Vietnam raised their level in the third set and fought hard to extend the match. However, South Korea remained composed in key moments and secured a 25-22 victory to complete a 3-0 sweep.

The defeat officially ended Vietnam’s three-year reign as AVC Cup champions and confirmed their status as former title holders. Instead of defending the crown, Vietnam will now compete against Kazakhstan Women’s National Volleyball Team in the third-place playoff.

Meanwhile, South Korea advanced to the final, where they will face Chinese Taipei Women’s National Volleyball Team for the championship.

Although Vietnam fell short of another final appearance, the tournament remains an important opportunity for the team to continue its development against some of Asia’s strongest volleyball nations as preparations continue for future continental and international competitions.
