AFC and UEFA back Vietnam’s drive to professionalize women’s football

Hanoi, 27 June 2026 – Vietnamese women’s football has received a significant boost as the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) and UEFA continue working alongside the Vietnam Football Federation (VFF) to improve the quality of domestic competitions and accelerate the professionalization of the women’s game.

On June 27, the VFF hosted a workshop at its headquarters in Hanoi as part of the AFC/UEFA Women’s Football Development Project. The event brought together representatives from AFC, UEFA, VFF, and women’s football clubs across the country to discuss strategies for enhancing the National Women’s Championship, strengthening club management, and creating a sustainable pathway toward a fully professional league.

The workshop was attended by VFF General Secretary Nguyen Van Phu, VFF Women’s Football Committee Chairman Do Van Nhat, UEFA representative Lowri Robert, AFC Head of Special Projects Amir Assokan Bin Abdullah, along with officials from the VFF and representatives of women’s football clubs.

Opening the workshop, Nguyen Van Phu emphasized that the continued support of AFC and UEFA plays a vital role in the long-term development of women’s football in Vietnam. He thanked both organizations for their assistance throughout the 2024–2027 Women’s Football Development Project and highlighted several key initiatives being implemented by the VFF, including restructuring the National Women’s Championship into a league-format competition and introducing a club licensing system for women’s clubs beginning in 2026.

Speaking on behalf of UEFA, Lowri Robert explained that the current partnership with the VFF focuses on three main priorities: developing a long-term strategy for women’s football, strengthening youth development, and improving the overall quality of the National Women’s Championship. She noted that the long-term vision is to increase female participation in football, establish a stronger player development pathway for the national teams, and enhance the league’s commercial value to attract greater investment and sponsorship.

During her presentation, Robert also stressed the importance of effective club governance, long-term planning, and structured player development from youth academies to senior teams. She encouraged clubs to improve player welfare while investing more in marketing, commercial activities, and brand building to increase the league’s visibility and appeal.

Representing the AFC, Amir Assokan Bin Abdullah said Vietnam still has enormous potential to develop women’s football. He described the gradual professionalization of the National Women’s Championship as an inevitable step and encouraged clubs to maximize the support provided by AFC and UEFA to improve their operational models, expand their fan base, attract commercial partners, and strengthen their long-term competitiveness.

Concluding the workshop, Nguyen Van Phu expressed confidence that the participating clubs would apply the knowledge and best practices shared during the event to improve their operations. He believes these efforts will help create a more professional, attractive, and sustainable National Women’s Championship while laying a stronger foundation for the continued growth of women’s football in Vietnam.
