Bangkok, 22 August 2026 – Vietnam produced a clinical second-half display to defeat Thailand 2-0 at Rajamangala Stadium, taking a commanding advantage from the first leg of the ASEAN Cup 2026 final despite spending much of the match under pressure.
Heavy rain had swept across Bangkok before kickoff, leaving a wet surface that affected the speed of the ball and made control difficult for both teams. Thailand adapted more quickly, dominating possession and repeatedly attempting to exploit the spaces between Vietnam’s full-backs and central defenders.
Head coach Kim Sang-sik, however, instructed his players to maintain a compact defensive shape. Vietnam were prepared to surrender possession, absorb pressure and wait for opportunities to attack quickly in transition.
Vietnam still created several promising moments during the opening 15 minutes. Nguyen Xuan Son twice tried his luck from outside the penalty area without troubling the Thai defense, while Nguyen Dinh Bac found shooting opportunities following passes from Xuan Son and Do Hoang Hen. His efforts, however, were either blocked or comfortably dealt with.
As the first half progressed, Thailand increasingly took control. The mobility of Sarach Yooyen and Seksan Ratree allowed the hosts to dictate play in midfield, while Teerasak Poeiphimai and Yotsakorn Burapha combined effectively in attack.
Thailand consequently began applying sustained pressure around Patrik Le Giang’s penalty area. When Vietnam denied them space closer to goal, the hosts turned to long-range efforts, with Seksan providing the first major warning when his powerful strike crashed against the crossbar.
Another huge opportunity arrived in the 36th minute. A defensive misunderstanding between Doan Van Hau and Nguyen Thanh Chung gave Yotsakorn enough space to fire a first-time diagonal effort toward goal. Le Giang reacted brilliantly, producing an outstanding diving save to tip the ball narrowly over the crossbar.
Vietnam remained under intense pressure approaching halftime. Teerasak later released Yotsakorn behind the defense, leaving the Thai forward one-on-one with Le Giang, but his finish sailed over the bar.
Kim’s side had spent much of the opening half on the defensive, but that did not necessarily mean Thailand were in control of the outcome. Throughout the tournament, Vietnam have repeatedly shown that they do not need prolonged possession or constant attacking pressure to decide matches.
Once again, Kim’s substitutions changed everything.
In the 58th minute, the South Korean coach withdrew Le Pham Thanh Long and Xuan Son, with the latter struggling to make his usual impact after being closely contained by Manuel Bihr. Kim introduced Nguyen Hai Long and Nguyen Quang Hai, and both substitutes would find the net within the following 11 minutes.
Vietnam struck first in the 62nd minute through a devastating counterattack.
From inside their own half, Nguyen Hoang Duc played a long ball toward Dinh Bac, who used his strength well to hold off Bihr. The 22-year-old then produced an excellent backheel into Hai Long’s path.
Hai Long did not hesitate. Racing onto the ball, the midfielder fired a first-time left-footed shot beyond the Thai goalkeeper to give Vietnam a 1-0 lead.
The goal continued Hai Long’s remarkable relationship with Rajamangala. On his previous appearance at the stadium, the midfielder had scored the decisive goal in Vietnam’s 3-2 victory over Thailand in the second leg of the ASEAN Cup 2024 final.
Before Thailand could recover, Vietnam struck again.
In the 69th minute, another rapid transition opened up the home defense. Hai Long switched play toward the right, where Hoang Hen broke into space before delivering a perfectly weighted cross into the penalty area.
Quang Hai timed his arrival superbly and connected with a first-time volley. The ball bounced off the turf and flew inside the near post, leaving the goalkeeper with little chance and doubling Vietnam’s advantage.
It was a particularly significant moment for the Vietnam captain. Quang Hai has endured a difficult tournament at times and faced criticism for some of his performances, but when Vietnam needed him on the biggest stage, he once again delivered. His finish demonstrated not only outstanding technique but also the big-game quality that has defined many of his finest performances for the national team.
Trailing by two goals at home, Thailand had little choice but to push forward aggressively.
The hosts repeatedly sent players into Vietnam’s defensive third, but Kim’s back line refused to buckle. Le Giang continued his excellent performance with several important interventions, while the defenders remained disciplined under sustained pressure.
Vietnam even came close to delivering a third blow at the opposite end when Dinh Bac unleashed a long-range strike that rattled the crossbar.
The final whistle confirmed a memorable 2-0 victory for Vietnam in Bangkok.
The statistics reflected the contrasting approaches of the two sides. Vietnam finished with only 36% possession and were outshot 16-13, but Kim’s players were far more ruthless when their opportunities arrived.
Both goals came from quick transitions and were scored within a seven-minute spell that completely transformed the final.
The victory also created another piece of history. It was the first time Vietnam had defeated Thailand by two or more goals on Thai soil in men’s 11-a-side football.
Vietnam’s previous landmark victories in Thailand had all come by a single-goal margin, including the 2-1 triumph in the 2008 AFF Cup final, the 1-0 King’s Cup victory in 2019 and the dramatic 3-2 win at Rajamangala in the 2024 ASEAN Cup final.
The result also extended Vietnam’s remarkable unbeaten run under Kim Sang-sik to 25 matches, comprising 22 victories and three draws. The defending champions have now scored 19 goals at the ASEAN Cup 2026 while conceding just once.
History is also firmly in Vietnam’s favor heading into the return fixture. No team has previously lost an ASEAN Cup knockout tie after winning the first leg by at least two goals.
Vietnam therefore return to Hanoi with one hand on the trophy, although the job is not yet complete. Kim and his players will have four days to recover and prepare before facing Thailand again at My Dinh National Stadium, where they will attempt to turn their commanding advantage into another ASEAN Cup title.
