The Cong Viettel midfielder Doan Ngoc Tan is expected to miss up to four weeks after suffering an ankle injury in a heavy challenge from Hanoi Police FC defender Doan Van Hau.
Medical examinations conducted on September 11 revealed that Ngoc Tan had suffered bone marrow bruising and swelling in the lower part of his fibula, along with a torn talofibular ligament. The midfielder is expected to require three to four weeks of treatment and rehabilitation.
The injury occurred in the 69th minute of The Cong Viettel’s 1-0 defeat to Hanoi Police FC in the second round of the 2026/27 V.League 1 season at Hang Day Stadium on September 10.
During a fierce midfield challenge, Van Hau caught Ngoc Tan near the ankle with the studs of his boot. Referee Ngo Duy Lan initially showed the Hanoi Police FC defender a yellow card. However, after reviewing the incident on the pitchside VAR monitor, he overturned the decision and issued a straight red card because of the dangerous nature of the tackle.
Ngoc Tan will now miss The Cong Viettel’s AFC Champions League Two Group E home match against Australian side Melbourne Victory at Hang Day Stadium on September 15.
His absence represents a significant setback for The Cong Viettel’s midfield, particularly with the new season still in its early stages. However, the upcoming suspension of domestic club competitions during the international window could limit the number of matches he misses.
Vietnam’s national team are scheduled to gather from September 21 to October 6. If his recovery progresses as expected, Ngoc Tan could return to action for The Cong Viettel shortly after the FIFA international break.
