Thailand, 1 April 2026 – U20 Vietnam Women failed to produce an upset against U20 China Women, suffering a 0–3 defeat in their opening match at the 2026 AFC U20 Women’s Asian Cup.
On April 1, U20 Vietnam Women kicked off their campaign against a physically stronger and technically superior Chinese side. Despite showing determination, the team led by coach Okiyama Masahiko could not overcome the gap in quality and had to settle for defeat.
Vietnam nearly made a dream start in the 4th minute, but Ngan Thi Thanh Hieu’s effort was denied by the Chinese goalkeeper. After that early chance, Vietnam focused on a compact defensive approach, successfully limiting several dangerous attacks from their opponents.
However, sustained pressure from China eventually broke through. In the 40th minute, Zheng Luu capitalized on a scramble inside the box to open the scoring. Just four minutes later, she struck again, showcasing sharp positioning and composure to double the lead.
China sealed the result in the 77th minute when Zeng Yujia reacted quickest to a set-piece situation, finishing from close range after Vietnam failed to clear a cross.
Following this match, U20 Vietnam Women will face U20 Thailand Women and U20 Bangladesh Women in the remaining group fixtures. Under the tournament format, the top two teams from each group, along with the two best third-placed teams, will advance to the quarter-finals.
