Hoang Hen underwhelms as Hanoi FC fall at Lach Tray

Hai Phong, 5 April 2026 – Hanoi FC suffered a narrow 0–1 defeat to hosts Hai Phong FC in Round 17 of V.League 1 on April 4, missing a crucial chance to break into the top three.

Coming into the match on the back of strong form under coach Harry Kewell, Hanoi FC were closing in on the top three and knew that a win at Lach Tray would temporarily push Ninh Binh down to fourth place. However, the notoriously difficult venue once again proved a major obstacle.

Under coach Chu Dinh Nghiem, Hai Phong have developed into a disciplined and well-organized side, combining compact defending with structured build-up play. Facing such a setup, Hanoi FC struggled to impose their usual attacking rhythm.

The home side adopted a patient counter-attacking approach and created early danger. Former Hanoi striker Joel Tagueu tested the visitors with multiple efforts, including a dangerous strike in the 7th minute and another sharp attempt midway through the first half, both forcing goalkeeper Van Chuan into action.

While Tagueu caused constant problems, Hanoi FC relied heavily on Do Hoang Hen to link play. Despite his solid performance, Hai Phong’s defense effectively neutralized Hanoi’s attacking threats, especially new signing David Fisher, limiting the visitors’ chances.

In the second half, coach Kewell made changes, but Hanoi FC’s attack became even less effective. Meanwhile, Hai Phong continued to play with patience and intensity, pressing strongly in midfield and maintaining defensive solidity.

The decisive moment came in the 79th minute when Huu Nam struck a first-time finish into the corner, leaving Van Chuan with no chance and sealing the victory for the hosts.

Despite throwing on attacking options late in the match, Hanoi FC failed to find an equalizer. Young defender Nhat Minh also stood out for Hai Phong with an impressive display, successfully containing Hanoi’s key attackers.

The defeat leaves Hanoi FC with 27 points after 17 matches, one point behind Ninh Binh but having played one game more, effectively missing the opportunity to move into the top three. Meanwhile, Hai Phong remain in sixth place but have closed the gap to the leading group.
