Indonesia, 19 April 2026 – Coach Cristiano Roland has emphasized that his Vietnam U17 players must maintain discipline, consistency, and a relaxed mindset ahead of their decisive clash with Indonesia at 19:30 on April 19 in the 2026 AFF U17 Championship.
Speaking to Indonesian media on April 18, Roland made it clear that player development matters more than results. “For me, the most important thing is the growth of these young players throughout the tournament,” he said. “In football, you win and you lose. But we don’t want to get drawn into a match where everything is about winning at all costs against the host team. We must stay disciplined, consistent, and mentally comfortable to perform at our best.”
The French coach highlighted that his squad, still very young, is on a long learning journey. “They are still developing and have a long road ahead. I’m pleased with their effort in both training and matches—that’s what matters most right now,” he added during a training session at Gelora Delta Stadium in Sidoarjo.
Vietnam U17 have impressed fans in Indonesia with dominant performances, including a 4–0 win over Malaysia and a 10–0 victory against Timor-Leste. They currently lead Group A with a perfect six points and a +14 goal difference without conceding a single goal. A draw against Indonesia would be enough to secure top spot and a place in the semi-finals, while the hosts must win to stay in contention.
Roland reiterated that he is not obsessed with points but with how his players respond under pressure. “The key is for them to step onto the pitch, give everything, and understand the way we want to play,” he concluded.
