VFF suspend referee over “imaginary” penalty decision

Hanoi, 27 May 2026 – On the morning of May 27, Vietnam Football Federation officially suspended referee Tran Ngoc Nho from match assignments after concluding that he made an incorrect penalty decision during the V.League 1 match between The Cong Viettel and PVF-CAND.

In an official document sent to The Cong Viettel, the VFF responded to the controversial incident from Round 24 of V.League 1 2025/2026. After reviewing the match footage, the federation’s technical committee determined that the referee’s decision to award a penalty to PVF-CAND was incorrect.

The disputed situation occurred in the 20th minute of the match when PVF-CAND player Thanh Nhan dribbled into The Cong Viettel’s penalty area near the byline before cutting the ball back to a teammate. Moments later, Ha Van Viet went down inside the box while preparing to shoot, prompting referee Tran Ngoc Nho to immediately award a penalty, judging that defender Dao Van Nam had committed a foul.

However, following further analysis, the VFF concluded that the decision was a clear officiating error that affected the course of the game. As a result, the federation imposed disciplinary action by temporarily removing referee Tran Ngoc Nho from officiating duties.

The VFF also emphasized that the punishment was carried out in accordance with international football regulations and the current disciplinary rules of Vietnamese football.
