Vietnam men’s gymnastics team secures five ASIAD 20 spots

Hanoi, 19 June 2026 – Vietnam’s men’s artistic gymnastics team achieved its first major success at the 2026 Asian Championships, securing qualification for the 20th Asian Games (Aichi-Nagoya 2026).

The continental championship, currently taking place in China, also serves as a qualifying event for the Asian Games. During the opening day of competition on June 18, athletes competed in qualification rounds for individual apparatus events, while scores also counted toward the team standings and individual all-around rankings.

Under the qualification system, the top 10 teams in the final team standings earn the maximum allocation of five athlete quotas for the Asian Games.

Vietnam’s squad, featuring Nguyen Van Khanh Phong, Dang Ngoc Xuan Thien, Nguyen Phuoc Hai, Tran Dinh Vuong, and Trinh Hai Khang, delivered a solid performance across all apparatus. Their combined score of 223.361 points placed Vietnam ninth overall, enough to secure five qualification spots for ASIAD 20.

China dominated the team competition with 254.194 points to claim the gold medal, while Japan finished second with 248.795 points and South Korea took bronze with 242.561 points. Despite featuring Olympic champion Carlos Yulo, the Philippines placed seventh with 236.161 points.

The ten teams that secured Asian Games qualification through the championship were China, Japan, South Korea, Kazakhstan, Chinese Taipei, Uzbekistan, the Philippines, Iran, Vietnam, and Singapore.

In the individual all-around competition, Chinese star Zhang Boheng topped the standings with 85.298 points to win the gold medal. Vietnam’s best performer was Nguyen Phuoc Hai, who finished 18th overall with 74.865 points. Nguyen Van Khanh Phong placed 24th after scoring 70.631 points.

The 2026 Asian Championships will continue through June 21, with apparatus finals beginning on June 19. In addition to the senior competition, the event also features junior championship categories, providing valuable experience for the next generation of Asian gymnasts.
