Duong Thuy Vi wins historic gold at 2026 Taolu World Cup

China, 8 July 2026 – Vietnam’s wushu team received a major boost on July 8 as Duong Thuy Vi delivered an outstanding performance to capture the gold medal in the women’s spear (Qiangshu) event at the 2026 Taolu World Cup.

Competing during the morning session of the tournament, Thuy Vi became the first Vietnamese athlete to stand atop the podium, giving both the national delegation and Vietnam’s wushu team an early reason to celebrate.

The women’s spear event featured seven competitors representing Vietnam, Malaysia, Iran, Indonesia, and Hong Kong, China. Thuy Vi impressed the judging panel with a technically flawless routine, earning 9.746 points to finish comfortably in first place.

Malaysia’s Pang Pui Yee claimed the silver medal with 9.726 points, while Aksiniia Schukina secured bronze after scoring 9.723 points.

The gold medal is a significant milestone for Thuy Vi. Before traveling to China, the experienced Vietnamese athlete had simply targeted a podium finish. However, thanks to her composure, consistency, and world-class execution, Vietnam’s leading taolu specialist exceeded expectations by winning gold in the spear event and adding a bronze medal in the straight sword (Jianshu) discipline.

The victory also marks a personal breakthrough for the 32-year-old. Despite previously winning silver medals at the 2016 and 2024 Taolu World Cups, this is the first time she has captured a World Cup title.

The 2026 Taolu World Cup is the fourth edition of the competition organized by the International Wushu Federation (IWUF), attracting athletes from 30 countries and territories around the world.

For Thuy Vi, the event is also her first international tournament of 2026. She remains one of Vietnam’s key wushu athletes as the national team continues preparations for the 20th Asian Games (ASIAD 20), where she is expected to play a leading role.
