After playing a crucial role in Vietnam’s AFF Cup 2024 victory, three South Korean assistants, including English-Korean interpreter Lee Seong Joo and two physical therapy assistants, Choi Sung Rak and Yoo Seung Min, have officially parted ways with the team to return to South Korea for further studies.
The success of the Vietnam national team under head coach Kim Sang Sik was not only the result of the players’ determination but also the dedication of the entire coaching staff, including the contributions of three outstanding South Korean assistants. Among them, Lee Seong Joo played a vital role as the English-Korean interpreter, ensuring smooth communication between the South Korean head coach and the international media. Meanwhile, Choi Sung Rak and Yoo Seung Min provided crucial physical therapy support, aiding the players in their recovery throughout the tournament.
The Journey of the South Korean Trio in Vietnam
Lee Seong Joo joined the Vietnam national team as an interpreter, primarily responsible for translating between Korean and English. His work proved invaluable, particularly during international press conferences and meetings where head coach Kim Sang Sik needed to communicate with foreign media.
Before taking on this role, Lee Seong Joo had limited experience in professional football settings. Speaking with South Korean news outlet Sport-G, he recalled how he secured the opportunity to work with Vietnam’s national team:
“I heard that the Vietnam national team was looking for an assistant interpreter for coach Kim Sang Sik. Since I was a university student at the time, I wasn’t sure I would be selected. Fortunately, through a reliable third party, I was given the chance to take on this role. It was an opportunity I couldn’t miss, and I immediately flew to Vietnam to begin this incredible experience.”

Despite the challenges of adapting to a high-pressure football environment, Lee quickly found motivation through the team’s camaraderie. “Football is not just about 90 minutes on the pitch. The work behind the scenes is just as crucial. Seeing the players smile and acknowledge my efforts gave me great satisfaction.”
Meanwhile, Choi Sung Rak and Yoo Seung Min served as physical therapy assistants, helping players recover from intense matches and training sessions. Their involvement came through a recommendation from professor Lee Seung Jae of Mokpo University, who saw potential in the two young professionals.
“There are many South Korean students who aspire to work in football, but few have the determination and persistence to follow through. Choi Sung Rak and Yoo Seung Min stood out as exceptional candidates,” professor Lee shared with Sport-G.
Speaking about his experience, Choi Sung Rak reflected on how invaluable the opportunity had been for his career: “This was a dream job where I could apply my knowledge in real-time, assisting players at the highest level. It was rewarding to see our work appreciated by both the coaching staff and the athletes.”
Similarly, Yoo Seung Min recalled the warmth he received from the Vietnamese players: “Many players told us, ‘Don’t rush back to South Korea, stay here with us!’ Those words meant a lot because they showed that our efforts were recognized.”
Transition and New Faces in the Vietnam National Team
With the departure of the three South Korean assistants, the Vietnam Football Federation (VFF) has been quick to find replacements to ensure continuity within the coaching staff. A new English-Korean interpreter arrived in Vietnam before the Lunar New Year and was spotted observing FC Seoul’s final training session at the Vietnam Youth Football Training Center in Hanoi.
As for coach Kim Sang Sik, he has expressed his gratitude for the contributions of his former assistants and remains focused on preparing the team for upcoming tournaments. With crucial World Cup qualifiers and regional competitions on the horizon, VFF is determined to maintain the level of professionalism and expertise in the national team setup.
While Lee Seong Joo, Choi Sung Rak, and Yoo Seung Min have returned to South Korea, their time with the Vietnam national team has left a lasting impact. Their dedication, hard work, and professionalism have been deeply appreciated by both the coaching staff and players. Their experience in Vietnam will undoubtedly serve as a stepping stone in their respective careers, and their presence will be missed by the squad.
As Vietnam continues its football journey under the guidance of coach Kim Sang Sik, the contributions of these three South Korean professionals will be remembered as part of the team’s historic AFF Cup 2024 triumph.
