Hanoi, 6 June 2025 – FIFA’s women’s football expert, Simon Toselli, has stated that the Vietnam women’s national football team could secure a spot in the top five strongest teams in Asia if the country implements a well-structured and long-term development strategy.
Speaking at the launch of the Vietnam Women’s Football Development Strategy for the period 2024-2027, which is part of a broader project funded by FIFA and AFC, Toselli emphasized that with the right strategic direction and strong collaboration with international football organizations, Vietnam has the potential to achieve its goal of becoming one of the top teams in Asia. He highlighted the importance of having a comprehensive plan that spans multiple years, one that not only aims for immediate success but also establishes a solid foundation for sustainable growth in women’s football.
The Vietnam Women’s Football Development Strategy sets ambitious and specific goals aimed at transforming the women’s football landscape in the country. The strategy outlines the need for the full professionalization of women’s football, from the grassroots level through the domestic league systems, club structures, and up to the national team. This includes inspiring younger generations, particularly girls, to take up football and creating an environment that fosters their development. Additionally, the strategy focuses on improving the quality of coaching and refereeing by prioritizing the training of female coaches and referees.

A key component of this strategy is the establishment of a strong women’s football brand in Vietnam. This includes enhanced media visibility, improved sponsorship deals, and broader public engagement. By strengthening the visibility and recognition of the women’s game, the strategy aims to create a more sustainable financial and social ecosystem for the sport. The expansion of football in schools is also a significant focus, with the aim of providing more opportunities for girls to play and compete in football, ensuring gender equality in the sport.
This strategy also includes a range of practical tasks designed to achieve its goals. These tasks include the development of competitive domestic leagues, increasing the capacity of clubs, advancing player development programs, creating a more professional national team environment, and implementing sports science techniques to improve performance. Moreover, there is a strong emphasis on improving governance and management structures to ensure the sustainability of these efforts. The expansion of school football programs is also a priority, as it will help identify young talent and provide girls with the chance to pursue their passion for the game.
Simon Toselli, who has years of expertise in women’s football, praised the Vietnam Football Federation (VFF) for its clear vision and potential in women’s football. He expressed his optimism about the future, stating that the strategy would not only improve the women’s football scene but also empower girls and women in Vietnam, offering them opportunities both on and off the football field. “The Vietnam Football Federation has tremendous potential, and with this strategy, there will be many opportunities for girls and women, not only in football but in life as well,” Toselli said.
The launch of this strategy marks an important turning point for women’s football in Vietnam, as it signals a concerted effort by the VFF to elevate the sport and ensure that it continues to grow and succeed on both the regional and global stages. With a clear plan and strong support, Vietnam’s women’s football team is set to make a significant impact in the years to come, and Toselli’s words offer a glimpse of the bright future ahead.
