Hanoi, 23 June, 2025 – A group of young Vietnamese footballers, including several current U23 national team players, are set for a unique experience as The Cong Viettel embarks on a tour of Africa, with scheduled friendly matches in Burundi from June 23 to July 1, 2025.
This special invitation came directly from the President of Burundi, with the Vietnamese delegation to be led by former football star Nguyen Hai Bien as the team leader and coach Dang Thanh Phuong as head coach.
Among the squad are key figures from Vietnam’s U23 national team such as Le Quoc Nhat Nam, Nguyen Manh Hung, Doan Huy Hoang, and Nguyen Dang Duong. Notably, Dang Duong will join the national U23 training camp later than his teammates to participate in the AFF U23 Championship in July.
Also making the trip is midfielder Nguyen Duc Hoang Minh, who has returned to Viettel after a loan stint with Binh Dinh. Despite his efforts, he could not help Binh Dinh avoid relegation from the V.League 1, as they finished bottom of the table after a heavy loss to Hanoi FC, while Da Nang escaped relegation with a win over Song Lam Nghe An.
There had been speculation about Nguyen Duc Chien participating in the African tour; however, his contract with The Cong Viettel has already ended. The midfielder has been absent since Round 25 of the V.League 1 and is reportedly set to join Phu Dong Ninh Binh.
The Cong Viettel will play two friendlies during their visit. The first is against newly crowned Burundi Premier League champions Aigle Noir CS on June 28 at Makamba Peace Park Stadium. The second is scheduled for June 29 against the Burundi U23 national team at Gitega Stadium.
According to a club statement, this tour represents a valuable opportunity for the young Vietnamese players to gain international exposure:
“This is the first time our young players will compete in Africa. It is a precious chance to grow both technically and mentally.”
In addition to football activities, the team will also engage in meaningful community events, including school visits and outreach programs at local orphanages. These acts reflect The Cong Viettel’s spirit of solidarity and social responsibility.
The club concluded:
“We wish the players a safe journey, strong performances, and unforgettable experiences in Burundi.”
This tour not only marks a new chapter in The Cong Viettel’s international development but also strengthens sporting diplomacy between Vietnam and Burundi through the shared love of football.
