Vietnam youth football holds a major advantage in the race for a World Cup spot

Hanoi, 6 August, 2025 – The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) has officially announced the host nations for the 2026 AFC U17 Women’s Asian Cup qualifiers, with Vietnam selected to host one of the groups.

This tournament serves as the gateway for teams aspiring to secure a spot at the 2026 FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup, making the qualifiers a crucial starting point for all participating nations.

As the host of a qualifying group, Vietnam U17 women’s team not only benefits from home advantage but has also been placed in Pot 1 during the draw. This favorable seeding gives the young Vietnamese players a strategic edge in their quest to reach the final tournament.

The qualifiers will feature 27 teams, divided into eight groups (five groups of three teams and three groups of four teams). The eight group winners will progress to the final round, joining the four teams that have automatically qualified: North Korea, Japan, South Korea, and China. The qualifiers are scheduled to take place from October 13 to 17, 2025, with the group stage draw set for August 7.

Vietnam’s squad for the qualifiers will largely consist of players aged U16 (born in 2009 or later). These young talents will first gain valuable international experience at the 2025 AFF U16 Women’s Championship, set to be held in Indonesia at the end of August, before stepping onto the continental stage.

With home support and a promising generation of players, Vietnam U17 women’s team is well-positioned to compete strongly for a spot in the final round of the AFC U17 Women’s Asian Cup 2026.
