Achilles Heel Injury Rules Goalkeeper Dang Van Lam Out of AFC Asian Cup 2023 with Vietnam National Team
Today (December 31, 2023), the Vietnam national team began their camp in preparation for the AFC Asian Cup 2023. The team’s medical staff concurrently conducted a comprehensive health check and evaluation of the called-up players.
The assessment revealed that three players, including Dang Van Lam, Nguyen Duc Chien, and Nguyen Thanh Nhan, could not recover in time to join the team for the continental tournament.
Goalkeeper Dang Van Lam and defender Nguyen Duc Chien are both undergoing treatment for previous injuries. Van Lam has an Achilles tendon injury, Duc Chien has a left transverse arch bone injury, while Thanh Nhan suffered an ankle injury in a recent match between PVF – CAND and Hue in the national first division, expected to take about three weeks to resume training.
After receiving the medical report, Coach Philippe Troussier decided to withdraw the call-up for Van Lam, Duc Chien, and Thanh Nhan. The French coach aims to ensure the safety of these players and hopes they can have a rest period to regain full fitness, looking forward to rejoining the squad in March 2024 for the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.
Consequently, the squad size is now 32 players, but with only 2 goalkeepers remaining. It is likely that Coach Troussier will need to call up an additional goalkeeper from the U23 team to join the Vietnam National Team for the AFC Asian Cup 2023.
