Ho Chi Minh City University of Sport Education defeated Thuy Loi University 4-2 in the penalty shootout after the regular time ended in a 0-0 draw in the final of the 2nd Vietnam Student Football Tournament.
After more than two weeks of exciting competition, this afternoon (March 31), the 2nd Vietnam Student Football Tournament – 2024 THACO Cup officially concluded with a “destined” final between two teams: Ho Chi Minh City University of Sport Education and Thuy Loi University. The final was attended by Deputy Prime Minister Tran Hong Ha, Chairman of Ho Chi Minh City People’s Committee Phan Van Mai, and leaders of various ministries and local authorities.
The two names in the final were both from Group C. In the group stage, the two teams drew 1-1 in a very balanced match, and this scenario reappeared in the final when neither team could secure a victory.
With an advantage in physicality and a somewhat smoother gameplay, Thuy Loi University dominated the first half. The students of Coach Vu Van Trung actively possessed the ball and strived to attack. However, the opponent, Ho Chi Minh City University of Sport Education, remained calm in defense and waited for quick counter-attack opportunities.
The hot weather in Ho Chi Minh City made both teams quite exhausted, so the match had few dangerous situations towards each other’s goals. Despite some prominent opportunities in the second half, after 80 minutes of tense competition, the two teams drew 0-0 and had to decide the winner through a penalty shootout.
On the 11m spot, Thuy Loi University, the team that lost in last season’s final, continued to miss the title, losing 2-4, and had to watch their rivals, Ho Chi Minh City University of Sport Education, crowned as champions.
Thus, the 2nd Vietnam Student Football Tournament – 2024 THACO Cup ended successfully. Besides the championship title with a prize of 300 million VND, Ho Chi Minh City University of Sport Education also won the Style Award; goalkeeper Huynh Thien Phuc was named the Best Goalkeeper; notably, forward Nguyen Minh Nhat received three individual awards: Top Scorer, Best Player, and Fan Favorite Player.
The runner-up, Thuy Loi University, received 150 million VND; Dong Nai University of Technology and Ton Duc Thang University jointly ranked third, each receiving a prize of 70 million VND.
The Organizing Committee also awarded prizes such as the Best Team of the Tournament, the Referee Team of the Final Match, and the Impressive Cheer Award.
