Ahead of the crucial second match against U23 Malaysia in Group D of the U23 Asian Cup 2024, Vietnam’s U23 head coach, Hoang Anh Tuan, has urged his players to avoid the mistakes made during their opening game against U23 Kuwait.
In their first match, U23 Vietnam secured a 3-1 victory over U23 Kuwait but not without committing significant errors, including a penalty and a red card for centre-back Nguyen Ngoc Thang. Reflecting on the game, Coach Hoang Anh Tuan acknowledged the need for a thorough review and adjustments.
With a potential quarterfinal spot on the line, U23 Vietnam faces U23 Malaysia in a match where a win could seal their advancement, especially if U23 Uzbekistan manages at least a draw against U23 Kuwait. Historically, Vietnam has had the upper hand in recent encounters with Malaysia, including a 4-1 victory at the 2023 U23 Southeast Asian Games under Coach Tuan’s guidance.
Coach Tuan has closely analyzed the current Malaysian squad, noting that about ten players from their last encounter at the U23 Southeast Asian Games are part of their current team. He emphasized, however, that each tournament is different and that statistical advantages are purely theoretical and have limited impact on the field.
Facing personnel challenges with Nguyen Ngoc Thang suspended and Nguyen Dinh Bac injured, Coach Tuan assured that tactical adjustments had been made, stating, “We have considered all options. The team is ready for the match against U23 Malaysia.”
He also expressed his hope for continued support from fans, highlighting it as crucial for boosting the team’s morale and performance. As Vietnam prepares for the upcoming game on April 20th, the coach’s focus is clear: rectify previous mistakes and capitalize on the opportunity to advance in the tournament.
