The U16 Vietnam national football team has avoided the “group of death” in the 2024 Southeast Asian U16 Championship and will face U16 Myanmar, U16 Brunei, and U16 Cambodia in the group stage.
According to the draw results, U16 Vietnam is placed in Group B, which is considered a relatively “easy” group for coach Tran Minh Chien and his team. This grouping provides a favorable path for U16 Vietnam to advance further in the tournament.
In contrast, Group C is being labeled the “group of death” with U16 Thailand, U16 Australia, U16 Malaysia, and U16 Timor Leste competing against each other. Host nation U16 Indonesia is in Group A alongside U16 Laos, U16 Philippines, and U16 Singapore.
The 2024 Southeast Asian U16 Championship is scheduled to take place from June 21 to July 4 in Surakarta, Indonesia. U16 Vietnam enters the tournament as the reigning runners-up, having lost 0-1 to U16 Indonesia in the final of the 2022 championship.
Currently, U16 Vietnam is undergoing rigorous training at the Vietnam Youth Football Training Center. Coach Tran Minh Chien and his 30-player squad have been in camp since May 23, focusing on preparations to improve upon their previous performance and aim for the title.
Coach Tran Minh Chien expressed confidence in his team’s capabilities and the favorable draw. “We have a strong squad, and the draw has given us a good opportunity to advance further in the tournament. Our focus now is on training and strategy to ensure we perform at our best,” he said.
The U16 team is benefiting from the comprehensive training facilities at the Vietnam Youth Football Training Center, which includes state-of-the-art equipment and expert coaching staff. The team is also expected to play several friendly matches in preparation for the tournament.
