Van Toan uncertain about starting position under coach Kim Sang Sik

On June 2, the Vietnamese national football team held their second training session under new head coach Kim Sang Sik in preparation for the upcoming matches in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.

Speaking before the training session, forward Van Toan expressed his thoughts: “The players feel a bit shy since we’re not used to each other yet, but by the end of the session, the feeling was better. We are all happy with the atmosphere the coach has created. Personally, I haven’t worked much with Coach Kim yet and don’t fully understand everything, but I have observed his coaching and believe he will bring new elements to the national team.”

Discussing the competition for positions, the Nam Dinh FC striker stated: “The competition for positions in the team is very high right now. I am determined to earn a starting spot. As before, we all strive for the best results for the national team. As Coach Kim Sang Sik mentioned, players must play for victory. The team hasn’t achieved good results for a long time. I will do my best in the upcoming matches.”

In the first leg of the World Cup 2026 qualifiers against the Philippines, Van Toan was one of the two players who scored, securing a victory for Vietnam. Fans are hopeful that the 1996-born striker can replicate his performance in the second leg, which will take place at 7 PM on June 6.

Adapting to a New Era

Under Coach Kim Sang Sik’s guidance, the Vietnamese national team is adjusting to a new era. The initial shyness among players is gradually giving way to a positive training environment. Kim’s previous coaching experience, particularly in South Korea and the AFC Champions League, is expected to bring fresh tactics and strategies to the team.

Van Toan’s cautious optimism reflects the transitional phase the team is undergoing. The forward’s eagerness to adapt and compete for a starting position highlights the healthy competition within the squad, which is crucial for improving overall performance.

Focus on Upcoming Matches

The team’s focus is now on the upcoming matches, particularly the crucial encounter with the Philippines. The victory in the first leg has set a positive tone, but the team is aware of the challenges ahead. The players are motivated to secure another win and continue their journey in the World Cup qualifiers.

Van Toan’s previous success against the Philippines adds to the anticipation surrounding the upcoming match. His ability to find the back of the net and create scoring opportunities will be vital for the team’s success. Fans and teammates alike are looking forward to seeing Van Toan and the rest of the squad perform under Coach Kim’s new system.

Building Momentum

The Vietnamese national team’s preparation under Coach Kim Sang Sik is not just about the immediate games but also about building long-term momentum. The introduction of new tactics, coupled with the players’ determination, is aimed at bringing sustained success to the team.

As the team continues to train and adapt, the focus remains on achieving positive results and making significant strides in the World Cup qualifiers. The journey is challenging, but the combination of experienced players like Van Toan and fresh strategies from Coach Kim Sang Sik provides hope for a promising future for Vietnamese football.
