Vietnamese sports achieved another significant milestone with Ha Thi Linh’s qualification for the Paris 2024 Olympics in the women’s 60kg boxing category.
On the evening of June 2, Ha Thi Linh faced Finnish boxer Vilma Viitanen in a crucial match to secure her Olympic spot. After a previous setback against Agnes Alexiusson on June 1, Linh was determined to clinch the win and secure her ticket to Paris this summer.
The match began with Linh facing challenges due to Viitanen’s excellent movement, which put the Vietnamese boxer on the defensive during the early part of the first round. However, Linh gradually regained her footing, delivering impressive counterattacks to take the upper hand by the end of the round. In the second round, Viitanen shifted to a more aggressive strategy, seeking to regain control. Despite intense pressure and difficult defensive maneuvers, Linh maintained a slight lead on the scorecards.
Entering the decisive third round, Viitanen intensified her attacks, momentarily putting Linh in a precarious position that prompted the referee to count. Yet, Linh demonstrated resilience and landed precise blows in the final seconds to secure a 4-1 victory on points. This triumph makes Ha Thi Linh the second Vietnamese boxer to qualify for the Paris 2024 Olympics, following Vo Thi Kim Anh’s qualification in the 54kg category.
Prior to Linh’s victory, Vietnam had already secured ten spots for the upcoming Olympics, including athletes from various disciplines: Nguyen Thuy Linh and Le Duc Phat in badminton; Trinh Thu Vinh and Le Thi Mong Tuyen in shooting; Nguyen Huy Hoang in swimming; Nguyen Thi That in cycling; Trinh Van Vinh in weightlifting; Vo Thi Kim Anh in boxing; Nguyen Thi Huong in canoeing; and Pham Thi Hue in rowing. Additionally, judo athlete Hoang Thi Tinh is awaiting confirmation from the International Judo Federation to compete in the women’s 48kg category at the Olympics.
