Vietnam bids farewell to the 2026 World Cup qualifiers with a loss to Iraq

Vietnam’s national football team ended their World Cup 2026 qualifying campaign with a 1-3 loss to Iraq. The only goal for Vietnam was scored by Tuan Hai, while Hussein Ali Haidar, Ali Jasim, and Aymen Hussein netted for Iraq.

In the match held at Basra International Stadium, Vietnam faced a strong Iraqi side that had already secured their spot in the third round of the World Cup 2026 qualifiers. Despite Vietnam’s efforts, they couldn’t overcome the skill and experience of the Iraqi team.

Tuan Hai’s goal offered a brief glimmer of hope for the Vietnamese side, but it was overshadowed by Iraq’s consistent pressure and scoring prowess. Hussein Ali Haidar opened the scoring for Iraq, followed by goals from Ali Jasim and Aymen Hussein, sealing a comprehensive victory for the home team.

With this defeat, Vietnam will now shift their focus to the third round of the Asian Cup 2027 qualifiers, set to begin in March 2025. On the other hand, Iraq finished the second round of the World Cup 2026 qualifiers with a perfect record, winning all six of their matches and advancing to the next stage.

Despite the disappointing end to their World Cup 2026 qualifying journey, Vietnam’s national team showed moments of promise and will look to build on these experiences as they prepare for future competitions. The team and their supporters will now turn their attention to the upcoming Asian Cup qualifiers, where they aim to make a significant impact.
