As part of their preparations for the 2024 ASEAN U19 Championship, the U19 Vietnam national team has made a surprising call-up for Vietnamese-Czech midfielder Ho Huu Hung.
On June 24, the U19 Vietnam squad announced a list of 35 players who will gather for training in preparation for the tournament scheduled to take place from July 17 to 29 in Surabaya, Indonesia. The most unexpected name on coach Hua Hien Vinh’s roster is the new addition, Ho Huu Hung. This midfielder, who has previously been called up to the U15 and U16 teams of the Czech Republic, brings a fresh perspective to the squad.
According to the Vietnam Football Federation (VFF), Ho Huu Hung, born in 2006, holds dual citizenship in Vietnam and the Czech Republic. He plays as an attacking midfielder or winger. Huu Hung’s football journey includes training stints at FC Slovácko from 2011 to 2016 and SK Slavia Praha from 2017 to 2018, before moving to Bohemians Praha, where he currently plays. Bohemians Praha is also the former club of goalkeeper Patrik Le Giang and midfielder Tony Le Tuan Anh, both of whom are Vietnamese overseas players who have returned to play in Vietnam.
In addition to Huu Hung, U19 Vietnam team has called up several top-tier talents in the age group, including Cao Van Binh (Song Lam Nghe An), Nguyen Manh Hung (Binh Phuoc), Nguyen Luong Tuan Khai, Vi Dinh Thuong, Nguyen Huu Tuan (Hue FC), Thai Ba Dat (PVF-CAND), Nguyen Trong Tuan (Bac Ninh FC), and Nguyen Anh Tuan (Phu Tho FC). These players missed the previous call-up due to commitments with their club teams in domestic competitions. Notably, Nguyen Manh Hung, Thai Ba Dat, and Nguyen Huu Tuan have experience playing at the U23 level for Vietnam and were part of the team that won the 2024 ASEAN U23 Championship.
The U19 Vietnam team will commence training on June 25 at the Vietnam Youth Football Training Center. The final 23-player roster for the championship will be announced before the team departs for Indonesia on July 16. In the 2024 ASEAN U19 Championship, U19 Vietnam has been placed in Group B, where they will face U19 Myanmar on July 18, U19 Australia on July 21, and U19 Laos on July 24. The team aims to leverage their preparation and strong squad to achieve success in the tournament.
