U16 Vietnam missed multiple opportunities and were held to a 1-1 draw by U16 Cambodia in their second group stage match of the ASEAN U16 Championship 2024.
Coming off a dominant 15-0 victory over U16 Brunei in their opening match, U16 Vietnam entered their second game against U16 Cambodia with high confidence. Coach Tran Minh Chien’s team quickly took control of the game from the start, displaying their attacking prowess.
Throughout the first half, U16 Vietnam created nearly ten scoring chances. However, forwards like Van Bach, Viet Long, and Thanh Binh were unable to capitalize on these opportunities. On the other side, U16 Cambodia, buoyed by their win over Myanmar, showed composure and had their own chances to score, but goalkeeper Thang Long made crucial saves to keep the game level. The first half ended 0-0.
At the beginning of the second half, Coach Tran Minh Chien made two substitutions, bringing in Gia Bao and Thai Hieu. These changes paid off as U16 Vietnam broke the deadlock in the 57th minute. Viet Long, after combining well with his teammates in the midfield, struck a precise shot into the corner of the net to give U16 Vietnam the lead.
However, U16 Vietnam’s lead was short-lived. Just five minutes later, a defensive lapse during a set-piece allowed Phan Vreak of U16 Cambodia to head the ball past goalkeeper Thang Long, equalizing the score.
In the remaining time, U16 Vietnam continued to push forward in search of a winning goal but struggled to convert their chances. Meanwhile, U16 Cambodia posed a threat on the counter-attack and came close to scoring a second goal. Despite their efforts, the match ended in a 1-1 draw.
This result leaves U16 Vietnam in a challenging position to secure a spot in the knockout stages. They now face a must-win situation against U16 Myanmar in their final group match on June 28.
