The ongoing Southeast Asian Junior, U23, and Senior Canoeing Championships 2024, held in Thuy Nguyen (Hai Phong), witnessed more stellar performances from the Vietnamese canoeing team on July 5.
On the first day of the competition, the Vietnamese team secured 18 gold medals across various events. On the second day, they added 14 more gold medals, bringing their total to 32 gold medals so far.
Some notable victories for Vietnam included the women’s four C4 1000m event, where the team of Bui Thi Yen, Nguyen Hong Thai, Ma Thi Thuong, and Diep Thi Huong won with a time of 4’16”45 in the final. In the mixed four C4 1000m event, the team featuring Olympic rower Nguyen Thi Huong, along with Phan Hong Quan, Nguyen Hong Thai, and Hien Nam, clinched the gold medal with a time of 3’57”85. This gold medal is another addition to Nguyen Thi Huong’s achievements as she prepares for the 2024 Paris Olympics.
In the final three events of the day, the Vietnamese canoeing team continued their dominance. In the U23 women’s double C2 1000m event, Ma Thi Thuong and Luc Thanh Nguyen won with a time of 4’57”28. The U23 men’s four C4 1000m event saw Tran Tuong Khang, Chau Dai Duong, Nguyen Van Cuong, and Truong Van Bao Linh take the gold with a time of 3’57”10. Finally, in the junior mixed four C4 1000m event, the team of Do Duc Hai, Nguyen Thi Ngoc Linh, Nguyen Le Thanh, and Nguyen Thi Trang triumphed with a time of 3’53”41.
As of now, Vietnam leads the medal tally with 32 gold, 31 silver, and 17 bronze medals. Thailand holds the second position with 7 gold, 5 silver, and 21 bronze medals, while Singapore is in third place with 5 gold, 8 silver, and 4 bronze medals. Indonesia, Malaysia, and Cambodia follow in the subsequent positions.
The Vietnamese canoeing team’s continued success at the championships highlights their dominance and preparedness for upcoming international competitions, including the Paris 2024 Olympics.
