The Vietnamese sports delegation is gearing up for the Paris 2024 Olympics with high hopes of winning medals. The send-off ceremony took place on the evening of July 17 in Hanoi, where the delegation was officially launched.
Participants and Objectives Vietnam will be represented by 16 athletes competing in 11 sports at the world’s premier sporting event in Paris this summer. The athletes include:
- Archery: Do Thi Anh Nguyet, Le Quoc Phong
- Athletics: Tran Thi Nhi Yen
- Badminton: Nguyen Thuy Linh, Le Duc Phat
- Boxing: Ha Thi Linh, Vo Thi Kim Anh
- Canoeing: Nguyen Thi Huong
- Cycling: Nguyen Thi That
- Rowing: Pham Thi Hue
- Shooting: Trinh Thu Vinh, Le Thi Mong Tuyen
- Swimming: Nguyen Huy Hoang, Vo Thi My Tien
- Weightlifting: Trinh Van Vinh
- Judo: Hoang Thi Tinh
At the ceremony, Minister of Culture, Sports, and Tourism Nguyen Van Hung presented the flag to the Vietnamese delegation. He emphasized the importance of the Olympics as the highest platform for Vietnamese sports to achieve significant milestones.
Historical Context Vietnam has participated in 10 Olympic Games over the past 40 years, with approximately 152 athletes competing. However, the nation has only secured five medals: one gold, three silver, and one bronze. The sole gold medal was won by shooter Hoang Xuan Vinh in the men’s 10m air pistol event at the Rio 2016 Olympics. Xuan Vinh is also the most successful Vietnamese athlete in Olympic history, contributing nearly half of the nation’s total medal count with one gold and one silver medal.
The first Vietnamese athlete to win an Olympic medal was Tran Hieu Ngan in taekwondo, who earned a silver medal at the Sydney 2000 Olympics. Subsequent medalists include Hoang Anh Tuan (silver) and Tran Le Quoc Toan (bronze) in weightlifting at the Beijing 2008 and London 2012 Olympics, respectively.
Expectations for Paris 2024 At the Paris 2024 Olympics, Vietnam aims to win medals. Dang Ha Viet, Director of the General Department of Sports and Physical Training and Head of the Vietnamese delegation, expressed confidence in the team’s readiness. “After a period of positive, serious, and responsible preparation, the officials, experts, coaches, and athletes of the Vietnamese sports delegation are confident and ready to participate in the Paris 2024 Olympics,” he said.
“This is the largest sports event, a fiercely competitive arena, gathering the world’s top athletes. Participating in the Paris Olympics is the most important task for Vietnamese sports in 2024, with the goal of achieving the highest number of athletes qualifying and striving for medals,” Dang Ha Viet added.
Commitment and Determination Dang Ha Viet emphasized the delegation’s sense of responsibility and commitment. “The Vietnamese sports delegation recognizes its responsibilities and has prepared a strong spirit, determination, and aspiration to contribute and strive for victory. We are ready to engage in the toughest competition for the glory of the nation,” he stated.
“Before participating in the Games, in this solemn ceremony, all officials, coaches, experts, and athletes of the Vietnamese sports delegation pledge to the Party, the State, the Government, and the people to do their best, remain calm, confident, intelligent, creative, and resilient, striving to win every medal for the delegation and the nation. We also aim to strengthen solidarity, friendship, cooperation, and development with other countries worldwide,” Dang Ha Viet concluded.
