New foreign player regulations for V.League 1 – 2024/2025 season

Starting from the V.League 1 – 2024/2025 season, clubs will have the right to use up to three foreign players and two naturalized Vietnamese players per match. This is an increase from the current rule, which allows clubs to field a maximum of three foreign players and one naturalized Vietnamese player per match.

Additionally, for the two teams participating in the AFC Champions League 2 (also known as the AFC Cup), there will be changes in registration and usage of foreign players. These teams will be allowed to register up to five foreign players for the competition. However, during each match, they can only use a maximum of three foreign players on the field.

Implications and Expectations

These adjustments aim to enhance the competitive level of V.League clubs and provide more opportunities for teams to strengthen their squads with talented foreign players. The increase in the number of naturalized Vietnamese players permitted per match is expected to leverage the pool of skilled players with Vietnamese heritage, thereby contributing to the overall development and success of the clubs in both domestic and international competitions.

Impact on Domestic and International Competitions

For the V.League, the changes are designed to make the league more competitive and attractive by allowing teams to field more talented players. This is particularly important as Vietnamese football continues to grow and aim for higher standards on both the regional and global stages.

For the AFC Champions League 2, the ability to register more foreign players is a strategic move to boost the performance of Vietnamese clubs in this prestigious tournament. Although the match-day usage remains limited to three foreign players, having a larger pool of registered foreign players allows for better squad rotation and injury management.

Preparing for the Changes

Clubs will need to strategize and plan their rosters carefully to maximize the benefits of the new regulations. This may involve scouting for high-quality foreign talent and identifying eligible Vietnamese heritage players who can make significant contributions to the team. The changes also underline the importance of having a strong domestic player base to complement the foreign talent.

Overall, these new rules are anticipated to bring a fresh dynamic to the V.League and enhance the performance of Vietnamese clubs in international competitions, ultimately contributing to the growth and development of football in Vietnam.
