Coach Hoang Anh Tuan: Luka Modric to Binh Duong? Why not?

In a press conference after the morning training session on July 23, newly appointed Binh Duong head coach Hoang Anh Tuan emphasized his commitment to building the best possible team. He also mentioned the ambitious possibility of recruiting superstar Luka Modric.

– You’ve been away from club coaching for over a decade. Why did you decide to accept the role of head coach at Binh Duong now?

  • More than 20 years ago, Binh Duong invited me to join, but I declined for various reasons. Later, I coached Khanh Hoa and Hai Phong in the V-League and received many other offers from clubs. However, I had to consider whether their motivations and goals aligned with mine, so I continued to focus on youth football at PVF and the Vietnam Football Federation. I believe working with young players also benefits Vietnamese football clubs in general. After many opportunities passed, I feel this is the right time to take on the role at Binh Duong.

– How do you plan to build the squad for Binh Duong?

  • Initially, in addition to the current squad, we have welcomed back defender Ho Tan Tai. He previously played well for Binh Duong before moving to Binh Dinh and CAHN, and now he has returned. Additionally, defender Ngo Tung Quoc from CLB TP HCM has also joined Binh Duong. Moving forward, we will consider foreign players to balance and strengthen the squad.

– What criteria will you use to select foreign players?

  • I want to bring the best players to Binh Duong. However, this depends on many factors, including the management’s approval, contractual agreements, and most importantly, whether these players are willing to contribute to Binh Duong.

I don’t like to speak ahead of what we have, but I have big aspirations. Right now, I wish to bring midfielder Luka Modric here, even though he is 40 years old. Beyond his technical abilities, such a move would bring motivation and a boost to Vietnamese football. Hai Phong managed to sign Brazilian legend Denilson, so why can’t Binh Duong do something similar? The presence of such stars would promote football culture and drive development.

– What will your coaching staff look like?

  • I have many Vietnamese assistants and helpers. Notably, former VFF Technical Director Jurgen Gede from Germany will be supporting us. Gede is well-acquainted with Vietnamese football, having worked with VFF and Viettel for six years. He will help not only the first team but also develop youth football plans.

Previously, Binh Duong did not have a physiotherapist, but now we have added Bulgarian expert Lazarov. Additionally, we have Russian fitness coach Targonskii, who has years of experience working in several European countries and the MLS. These additions will help the coaching staff improve professional work.

– With such significant investment, what are your goals for Binh Duong in the upcoming V-League season?

  • Professional football demands achievements, and we always aim for the best. To achieve this, players must enter the field with a desire to win. I will build a solid attacking playstyle, though it will depend on the squad to determine the most effective attacking strategy. I can’t promise what I haven’t done yet, but I assure you Binh Duong will be different next season.
