Archer Le Quoc Phong faces a European athlete at the Paris 2024 Olympics knockout rounds

After the qualification rounds, Vietnamese archer Le Quoc Phong has identified his opponent for the round of 1/32 in the men’s individual recurve event at the Paris 2024 Olympics. He will face Dan Olaru from Moldova, a formidable competitor ranked 18th in the qualification round.

On the evening of July 25th (Vietnam time), Le Quoc Phong, the second Vietnamese athlete in the archery events, took to the field for the men’s individual recurve competition. The 24-year-old archer had a promising start, scoring 56 points in his first end. However, his second end saw a drop in performance, with his final arrow scoring only 4 points. This inconsistency caused him to fall significantly behind the leading pack.

After 12 ends and 72 arrows, Le Quoc Phong finished with a total of 652 points, placing him 47th out of 64 competitors. His next challenge will be against Dan Olaru from Moldova in the round of 1/32, scheduled for July 30th. Olaru, having secured the 18th position, presents a tough match for Quoc Phong as he aims to advance further in the tournament.

The highest score in the men’s qualification round was achieved by Kim Woo Jin of South Korea, who amassed 686 points. Despite his impressive performance, Kim did not break the world record, unlike his compatriot Lim Si Hyeon in the women’s event.

Earlier, Vietnamese archer Do Thi Anh Nguyet competed in the women’s individual recurve qualification round, achieving a score of 648 points, placing her 37th out of 64 participants. She is set to face Mobina Fallah from Iran, who is ranked 28th, in her round of 1/32 match on July 30th.

Despite their individual efforts, the combined scores of Le Quoc Phong and Do Thi Anh Nguyet placed them 24th out of 27 in the mixed team event, thus failing to advance to the knockout rounds for a chance at a medal.

Looking Ahead

As Le Quoc Phong and Do Thi Anh Nguyet prepare for their upcoming matches, they carry the hopes and support of the Vietnamese sports community. Competing at the Olympic Games is a significant achievement in itself, and both archers have demonstrated their skill and determination on the global stage.

While the road ahead is challenging, especially with strong opponents like Dan Olaru and Mobina Fallah, both Vietnamese archers have the potential to deliver strong performances. Their participation not only adds to their personal experiences but also inspires future generations of athletes in Vietnam.

The journey of Le Quoc Phong and Do Thi Anh Nguyet at the Paris 2024 Olympics is a testament to their hard work, dedication, and the growing presence of Vietnamese athletes in international sports. As they step into their next rounds, their focus will be on maintaining consistency and aiming for precision, with the ultimate goal of advancing further in the competition and achieving personal bests.
