Hanoi Football Club has officially signed a one-year contract with center-back Kyle Colonna, marking a significant addition to their squad for the 2024/2025 season.
The 2024/2025 V.League season will see a major shift in Vietnam football as the VPF (Vietnam Professional Football) has introduced a new regulation allowing each V.League club to utilize up to two overseas Vietnamese players. This change is part of a broader effort to prioritize and facilitate the return of talented Vietnamese expatriates to play in the domestic league. In line with this strategy, Hanoi FC has been actively scouting and attracting talent both domestically and internationally. Their latest signing, Kyle Colonna, a towering center-back standing at 1.88 meters, exemplifies this approach.
Kyle Colonna, whose mother is Vietnamese and father is American, was encouraged by his family to pursue a career in football from a young age. He spent four years playing for San Diego State University (2018-2022), making 69 appearances and serving as team captain for two consecutive years. His most notable achievement with the team was reaching the top 14 in the national tournament in 2022.
Impressing during his collegiate career, Colonna signed a professional contract with New Mexico United, a club in the USL Championship, the second tier of American soccer. During his time with New Mexico United, the 1999-born defender made 11 appearances, scored two goals, and maintained an impressive 86% passing accuracy.
Colonna expressed his excitement about joining Hanoi FC and returning to the country he has long felt connected to through his mother. “My mother used to tell me stories about Vietnam when I was young, and she often cooked traditional Vietnamese dishes for me. I’ve always dreamed of coming back here, and now I’ve made that dream a reality, and even more than that. I will give my all and strive to help the team reach the highest position in the 2024/2025 season,” said Kyle Colonna.
The signing of Kyle Colonna is seen as a strategic move by Hanoi FC as they bolster their defense ahead of the new season. With his dual heritage and experience in American soccer, Colonna is expected to bring a unique blend of skills and leadership to the team, potentially making a significant impact as Hanoi FC aims for top honors in the upcoming V.League campaign.
