U16 Vietnam stuns U16 Uzbekistan with a 3-0 victory at Peace Cup 2024

After an unsuccessful opening match against the host team China U16 at the Peace Cup 2024, the Vietnam U16 national team made a stunning comeback by securing a 3-0 victory over Uzbekistan U16, a team that was considered even stronger than China U16.

In this match, Head Coach Cristiano Roland opted for a counter-attacking strategy, which proved to be a wise decision given that Uzbekistan U16 was regarded as a top contender for the championship alongside Japan U16 in this tournament. The tactical approach, combined with a high level of focus, allowed Vietnam U16 to maintain a stable performance despite the pressure from their Central Asian opponents. The defense, in particular, played exceptionally well, effectively neutralizing most of Uzbekistan’s offensive efforts.

The game took a surprising turn in the 15th minute when Vietnam U16 took the lead from a set-piece situation. A free-kick from the right flank was sent into the box, where Viet Long rose above the defenders to head the ball into the net, putting Vietnam ahead 1-0. This crucial goal significantly eased the psychological pressure on Coach Cristiano Roland’s players, enabling them to execute their game plan more effectively. The scoreline could have been doubled just five minutes later, but Thien Phu’s shot hit the crossbar, denying Vietnam a second goal.

Despite being a goal down, Uzbekistan U16 continued to dominate possession, but their efforts were thwarted by Vietnam’s disciplined defense, which remained well-organized and provided solid support to each other throughout the match.

In the second half, Vietnam U16 stayed true to their chosen strategy. Unlike their opening game, the Vietnamese forwards capitalized on the chances they created. In the 50th minute, Van Bach doubled the lead with an impressive solo run down the right wing, cutting past a defender before firing a precise shot into the net.

Refusing to accept defeat, Uzbekistan U16 launched a series of strong attacks in the following minutes. However, this aggressive approach played into Vietnam’s hands, as it left spaces open for counter-attacks. In the 70th minute, taking advantage of a defensive lapse, Thien Phu broke free and coolly slotted the ball past goalkeeper Olimov to make it 3-0. Vietnam U16 nearly added a fourth goal in the 90th minute, but the ball struck the post, sparing Uzbekistan further humiliation.

With this emphatic win, Vietnam U16 has set the stage for an exciting final group match against Japan U16, scheduled for August 20. Japan U16 drew 1-1 with Uzbekistan in their opening game, adding extra intrigue to the upcoming showdown.

This victory not only boosts the morale of the Vietnam U16 squad but also highlights their potential as they prepare to face one of the strongest teams in the tournament. The team’s performance has given fans renewed hope and anticipation as they look forward to the final match, which will determine the standings in this highly competitive group.
