U20 Russian national team will remain in Hanoi for a rematch against U20 Vietnam, while their senior national team has already departed back to Russia. This decision comes after the cancellation of the highly anticipated friendly match between Russia and Thailand, originally scheduled for September 7, due to the severe impact of Typhoon No. 3, also known as Yagi.
In the early hours of September 8, the senior Russian national football team left Noi Bai Airport on a charter flight, following the match cancellation. Despite their desire to play, the Russian Football Union (RFU) agreed to cancel the match as the conditions in Hanoi were deemed unsafe for the game to proceed. However, the U20 Russian team will stay in Vietnam to prepare for their upcoming rematch against U20 Vietnam, which is set to take place on September 9 at 5 p.m. The match will be held at the Vietnam Youth Football Training Center, but due to safety concerns and logistical reasons, the game will be played behind closed doors, with no spectators or media coverage allowed.
This rematch follows a previous friendly between the two teams on September 6, where U20 Russia secured a 3-0 victory against U20 Vietnam. In that match, Russian players Ivan Lepsky, Alexey Koltkov, and Konstantin Dorofeev found the back of the net, showcasing the team’s attacking prowess. Despite the loss, U20 Vietnam received praise from Russian coach Ivan Shabarov, who complimented their effort and the potential shown by the young Vietnamese players.
Shabarov acknowledged that the weather conditions in Hanoi posed a significant challenge for his team. The high humidity and heat made it difficult for the young Russian players to maintain their stamina and adapt to the environment. Despite the harsh conditions, the coach was pleased with his team’s overall performance and their ability to push through the difficulties.
The upcoming rematch on September 9 offers U20 Vietnam a chance to adjust their strategy and improve upon their previous performance. Although the match will not be open to the public, it remains an important opportunity for both teams to further develop and assess their players. U20 Vietnam, in particular, will be looking to take lessons from the first match and make necessary adjustments to compete more effectively against their Russian counterparts.
The U20 Russian team’s continued presence in Hanoi highlights their commitment to making the most of their time in Vietnam, despite the unforeseen challenges caused by the typhoon. For U20 Vietnam, this rematch represents a crucial opportunity for young players to gain valuable experience against a strong European side, contributing to their growth and preparation for future international tournaments.
