Vietnam women’s football with the opportunity to make history at the AFC Women’s Champions League.

Ho Chi Minh City Women’s Football Club is poised to reach the semi-finals of the 2024/2025 AFC Women’s Champions League, as they hold key advantages heading into the quarter-finals.

In their debut campaign at the AFC Women’s Champions League, Ho Chi Minh City has delivered an impressive performance, securing two victories in their first two matches. Led by star striker Huynh Nhu, they defeated Taichung Blue Whale (Chinese Taipei) and Odisha (India) with identical 3-1 scorelines, ensuring their place in the quarter-finals with one match remaining.

Their final group match against Urawa Red Diamonds holds little significance in terms of progression, as the draw for the quarter-finals will be determined via a lottery system. In the 2024/2025 edition of the AFC Women’s Champions League, quarter-final matchups are not pre-determined by group rankings but are instead decided through a draw.

Specifically, the three group winners and the best second-placed team will be placed in Group A, while the remaining four teams—two second-placed teams and two third-placed teams—will be assigned to Group B. With six points secured, Ho Chi Minh City has guaranteed their spot in Group A, regardless of whether they finish first or second in their group.

In Group A, Abu Dhabi Country (UAE) is currently the second-placed team with five points from three matches, while in Group B, Kaya Iloilo (Philippines) sits in second place with only two points. Even if Kaya wins their final match, they will not surpass Ho Chi Minh City’s six-point tally.

One key advantage for Ho Chi Minh City is that the teams in Group A will have home-field advantage for the quarter-finals. This means that Ho Chi Minh City could play their quarter-final match on home soil, giving them a significant boost as they aim for a deep run in the tournament.

Based on the current standings in the other groups, potential quarter-final opponents for Ho Chi Minh City include Abu Dhabi Country, Wuhan Jiangda (China), Kaya Iloilo, Bam Khatoon (Iran), and College of Asian Scholars (Thailand). Among these teams, Wuhan Jiangda comes from a stronger footballing background but has struggled in the group stage, losing two matches and still uncertain about advancing to the quarter-finals. The other teams are considered more on par with or weaker than Ho Chi Minh City.

The quarter-final draw for the AFC Women’s Champions League 2024/2025 is scheduled to take place in January 2025, with the single-leg quarter-final matches set for late March 2025. Before that, Ho Chi Minh City will play their final group-stage match against Urawa Red Diamonds tomorrow, on October 12.
