Van Quyet is honored by FIFA after retiring from the national team

FIFA has expressed its admiration for Van Quyet following his official retirement from the Vietnam national football team.

During the October 2024 FIFA Days training camp, Van Quyet had the opportunity to return to the Vietnam national team. Head coach Kim Sang Sik highlighted that experienced players like Van Quyet play a crucial role in helping younger players develop within the squad.

In the friendly match against India, Van Quyet did not start but made a significant impact after coming on as a substitute. His intricate passing and close coordination with his teammates improved Vietnam’s attacking play. With a bit more luck, he might have scored in the match.

After the game, Coach Kim Sang Sik confirmed in the post-match press conference that Van Quyet had expressed his desire to retire from the national team following the friendly.

Van Quyet’s decision surprised and saddened many fans, especially considering his impressive performances for Hanoi FC. However, despite his success at the club level, he had not featured much for the national team since 2019 until this recent call-up.

In recognition of his long-standing contributions to football, FIFA paid tribute to Van Quyet. The official FIFA World Cup page posted a brief yet meaningful message: “Class is permanent.”

In the comments section, many fans expressed their love and gratitude for Van Quyet’s contributions to the national team over the years.

Van Quyet played 60 matches and scored 16 goals for Vietnam. Notably, he captained the national team to their AFF Cup victory in 2018 under coach Park Hang Seo’s leadership.
