The 2024 ASEAN Cup will feature 10 teams, with the final participant being determined after the October 2024 FIFA Days play-offs. Timor Leste secured the last spot in the region’s most prestigious football tournament after defeating Brunei in the play-offs.
In the first leg on October 8, Timor Leste impressed by winning 1-0 away in Brunei, with Gali Freitas scoring the only goal. In the return leg, held on October 15, Timor Leste managed a 0-0 draw on their home turf, winning the play-off tie 1-0 on aggregate. This result earned them a place in the 2024 ASEAN Cup.
Timor Leste will join Group A, which includes Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, and Cambodia.
The 2024 ASEAN Cup is set to take place from December 8, 2024, to January 5, 2025. While the tournament’s name has changed, the format remains the same as in recent editions, with group-stage matches hosted across different countries. The semi-finals and final will be played over two legs, home and away.
Defending champions Thailand will look to retain their title after winning the cup in 2022.
Vietnam’s national team, part of Group B, will begin their campaign with group-stage matches against Laos (December 9), Indonesia (December 15), the Philippines (December 18), and Myanmar (December 21).
