Indonesia, 29 Sep 2026 – Nguyen Dinh Bac expressed his disappointment after Vietnam suffered a 2-0 defeat to Thailand at the FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026, admitting that the team paid the price for failing to convert their opportunities.
Vietnam suffered their first defeat of the tournament in their second Group B match on September 29, going down 2-0 against regional rivals Thailand. Speaking after the match, Dinh Bac made no attempt to hide his disappointment but declined to offer his own assessment of the specific reasons behind the defeat. “I feel very sad that the team did not get the result we wanted today. As for the reasons why we lost, I would prefer to leave that to the experts and the fans to analyse and evaluate,” the forward said.
The 2004-born striker instead highlighted Vietnam’s lack of efficiency in front of goal as one of the key factors in the result. Despite creating a number of promising opportunities, Vietnam were unable to find the net and were eventually punished by a more clinical Thai side. “The whole team worked very hard today and created many dangerous chances. But in football, when you cannot score, you will pay the price by conceding goals,” Dinh Bac said. “Even so, this defeat will certainly help us reflect on ourselves and become stronger.”
Dinh Bac also acknowledged the quality of Thailand’s performance and showed respect for a squad containing several high-quality players. The defeat represented a setback for Vietnam following their 1-0 victory over the Philippines in the opening match, but the forward stressed that the players cannot afford to dwell on the disappointment.
“As professional players, we understand that no team can remain unbeaten forever. The whole team will immediately return to training to improve and prepare as well as possible for the matches ahead,” Dinh Bac said. “At this moment, I can only say thank you and hope the fans will always stand with us and continue to give the Vietnam national team their support. The players and coaching staff will always give everything whenever we play.”
Vietnam will now look to put the Thailand defeat behind them quickly as they turn their attention to the remainder of their FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026 campaign.
