The ASEAN Cup trophy brings a special training program to young players in Hanoi

As part of the ASEAN Cup 2024 Trophy Tour (formerly known as the AFF Cup), a workshop and training session introducing the “Okada” coaching method was held this morning (October 26) at the Vietnam Youth Football Training Center in Hanoi. This method, named after renowned coach Takeshi Okada, aims to enhance coaching strategies and player development.

Today, the ASEAN Cup 2024 trophy officially arrived in Hanoi, continuing its journey across the capital cities of Southeast Asia ahead of the regional championship scheduled to begin on December 8, 2024. The event welcomed representatives from the Vietnam Football Federation (VFF) and the Department of Physical Education and Sports, along with three former Vietnamese football icons – Duong Hong Son, Thach Bao Khanh, and Pham Thanh Luong – who were part of the historic AFF Cup-winning team in 2008.

The “Okada” training workshop, named after Takeshi Okada, who famously led Japan to its first-ever World Cup appearance in 1998 and guided the team to the knockout stage of the 2010 World Cup, was conducted by coaches from Imabari Football Club, a professional team competing in Japan’s J3 League. This method, pioneered by Okada, emphasizes holistic development, tactical awareness, and physical conditioning tailored for the Asian football environment.

In the afternoon, Duong Hong Son and Thach Bao Khanh, who both contributed to Vietnam’s victory at the 2008 AFF Cup, were invited as special guests for the Trophy Tour’s stop at AEON Mall Ha Dong in Hanoi. They will participate in meet-and-greet sessions with fans, inspiring the next generation of Vietnamese football players as the prestigious trophy makes its way across the region.

Prior to arriving in Vietnam, the ASEAN Cup Trophy Tour traveled through Bangkok, Thailand; Singapore; and Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. After leaving Hanoi, it will continue to Jakarta, Indonesia, on November 2 and conclude in Manila, Philippines, on November 9, just in time for the official start of the group stage on December 8.

With the ASEAN Cup 2024 fast approaching, excitement is building as Southeast Asian football fans gear up for what promises to be a thrilling tournament, uniting countries across the region through the love of the game.
