Vietnam’s futsal team pulled off a remarkable 5-4 comeback victory against Australia in the semifinals of the 2024 ASEAN Futsal Championship on November 8, securing their spot in the final. The thrilling match saw Vietnam overcome a two-goal deficit, despite the absence of captain Duc Hoa due to injury.
Australia began strongly, taking advantage of Vietnam’s shaky start. In the 5th minute, a well-coordinated play by Australia ended with Sewell scoring from close range to open the score. Australia continued to disrupt Vietnam’s flow with physical play, making it difficult for Vietnam to execute their typical style. Just before halftime, a defensive lapse allowed Rogan to capitalize, doubling Australia’s lead to 2-0.
Trailing by two, Vietnam intensified their attacks in search of goals but struggled to find the net. The breakthrough came in the 31st minute when Da Hai was fouled in Australia’s penalty area. Minh Quang converted the resulting penalty to narrow the score to 1-2. Four minutes later, Da Hai struck again with a precise shot from the far post to equalize at 2-2.
The final five minutes of regulation brought high drama. Just 10 seconds after Vietnam’s equalizer, pressure from Australia led to an unfortunate own goal by Nhat Trung, putting Australia back in the lead at 3-2. However, in the 38th minute, Da Hai scored his second goal, assisted by Minh Quang, to level the match once more at 3-3.
With the score tied after 40 minutes, the game moved to extra time. In the opening moments of the second extra period, Vietnam took the lead for the first time as Cong Vien launched a long pass that Thinh Phat headed in brilliantly, making it 4-3. Australia responded with relentless attacks, eventually scoring in the 48th minute through Lynch in a power-play move, bringing the game to 4-4.
In the final moments, both teams earned 10-meter free kicks. Thinh Phat converted his attempt, securing a dramatic 5-4 victory for Vietnam.
With this stunning win, Vietnam advances to the final, where they will face the winner of the Indonesia vs. Thailand semifinal.
