Former Vietnamese national team star Cong Vinh is set to assist Song Lam Nghe An (SLNA) as an assistant coach beginning in Round 8 of the 2024/2025 V-League season. This move follows SLNA’s recent announcement of changes to their coaching staff, with Coach Pham Anh Tuan stepping down after seven rounds of winless performances that left the team at the bottom of the standings.
On the afternoon of November 11, SLNA officially confirmed Coach Pham Anh Tuan’s departure, making him the first manager to leave his position in the 2024/2025 V-League season. Shortly after his resignation, the club revealed that Phan Nhu Thuat would be taking over as the new head coach, with a fresh team of assistants to support him.
Among the newly appointed assistants are two notable figures in Vietnamese football: Van Quyet and Cong Vinh. Both former national stars bring their extensive experience to support Coach Phan Nhu Thuat in guiding SLNA through a challenging season.
Despite the management changes, there are still substantial hurdles for SLNA to overcome. The squad depth and quality have been a concern, with lackluster performances from foreign players affecting the team’s standing in the league.
According to the V-League schedule, SLNA will play away against Quang Nam on November 15, followed by a home match against The Cong Viettel on November 19. After Round 9, the league will pause to allow the Vietnamese national team to prepare for the upcoming ASEAN Cup 2024.
