Cong Vinh declines role as assistant coach for Song Lam Nghe An, fans left disappointed

Fans of Song Lam Nghe An (SLNA) were left disappointed after star Cong Vinh declined an offer to join the coaching staff, despite an earlier announcement from the club. On the evening of November 11, SLNA introduced Phan Nhu Thuat as the new head coach following Pham Anh Tuan’s resignation. The club had initially named Cong Vinh and Van Quyen among the assistant coaches, sparking excitement among fans who hoped their combined experience could help SLNA overcome a difficult season.

However, Cong Vinh soon clarified his position on social media, surprising fans with his decision not to take the role. In a post on his personal Facebook page, he wrote: “Today, there have been several reports on news sites and social media platforms saying I have accepted a role as assistant coach for SLNA. This is NOT TRUE.

“Earlier today (November 11), the club’s management approached me with an offer to become the Chairman of the SLNA Coaching Council, overseeing both the V-League team and youth development. While I am deeply honored to receive this invitation, I need more time to consider and arrange my current commitments.

“After discussing the matter with my family, I realized that the timing is too tight, and I cannot leave my work in Ho Chi Minh City at the moment. Therefore, I will have to decline SLNA’s invitation to assist the team. I sincerely thank the club’s management and SLNA fans for their understanding.

“I send my best wishes to SLNA and deeply appreciate all the support I have received. Hopefully, in the future, if my circumstances allow, I will have the chance to contribute to my hometown team.”

SLNA is facing a challenging season, having gone winless in their first seven rounds of the 2024/2025 V-League, leaving them near the bottom of the standings and prompting Coach Pham Anh Tuan’s departure.
