Following their 2-1 victory over Thailand in the first leg of the AFF Cup 2024 final, the Vietnam national football team is brimming with confidence as they head to Thailand to prepare for the decisive second leg. The match will take place at Rajamangala Stadium on January 5, with Vietnam holding a narrow advantage.
On January 2, Vietnam defeated Thailand at Viet Tri Stadium thanks to two goals from Nguyen Xuan Son. Thailand’s lone goal came from defender Chalermsak Aukkee. This result has given Coach Kim Sang-sik’s team a psychological edge and a tangible advantage as they aim to secure their third AFF Cup title.
Positive Atmosphere During Travel
Despite the tight travel schedule, the Vietnamese squad remained upbeat and energized as they departed for Thailand on January 3. Players were seen chatting and relaxing, reflecting the positive atmosphere within the team. Except for the long-term injuries to Van Toan and Ho Tan Tai, the rest of the squad is in good health and ready for the challenge.
Upon arrival in Thailand, the team will have time to rest and recover before resuming regular training on January 4. They will also conduct a familiarization session at Rajamangala Stadium, the venue for the decisive second leg.
Confidence in the Squad
Vietnam’s players have expressed their confidence following the first-leg victory. Center-back Thanh Chung emphasized the team’s fearless mindset, stating, “The current Vietnam team doesn’t have the concept of fearing Thailand, even though they are very strong. In the past, there was talk about Vietnam being afraid of Thailand, but that’s not true. When we step onto the pitch, we don’t fear anyone. We only fear not performing to our potential.”
Midfielder Quang Hai also highlighted the significance of the first-leg result. “This victory gives us a great foundation and advantage heading into the second leg. It builds our confidence and determination to achieve a positive result in Bangkok,” he said.
Coach Kim Sang-sik, while confident, remains cautious. “Coach Park Hang-seo once said that Vietnam no longer fears Thailand. After today’s victory, we have demonstrated our strength against this opponent,” Kim noted. “However, we haven’t won the championship yet. The second leg is still ahead, and our chances depend on how well the players perform. This first leg is a valuable experience for us.”
The Decisive Second Leg
The second leg of the AFF Cup 2024 final will kick off at 8:00 p.m. on January 5 at Rajamangala Stadium. Vietnam needs at least a draw to clinch their third AFF Cup title. With their current form, tactical discipline, and a united team spirit, “The Golden Stars” are determined to overcome Thailand and bring the trophy home. Fans eagerly await the conclusion of this high-stakes battle between Southeast Asia’s footballing giants.
