Thailand’s head coach Masatada Ishii has expressed determination and confidence as his team prepares to host Vietnam in the second leg of the AFF Cup 2024 final at Rajamangala Stadium on January 5. Trailing 1-2 after the first leg, Ishii acknowledged the challenges ahead but emphasized Thailand’s readiness to rectify their mistakes and push for victory.
Speaking at the pre-match press conference, Ishii admitted that Vietnam’s standout forward Nguyen Xuan Son was a key factor in the first-leg defeat. “In the first leg, Thailand lost 1-2 and couldn’t stop Xuan Son’s brilliance. Tomorrow, we will focus on correcting the mistakes we made, especially in defensive organization. Containing Xuan Son will be our top priority in this match,” he said.
The coach also addressed the status of Chalermsak Aukkee, the defender whose error led to Vietnam’s second goal in the first leg. While acknowledging the critical nature of his decision, Ishii remained noncommittal about whether Chalermsak would feature in the decisive match. “At this moment, I cannot confirm whether player number 5 will be on the field tomorrow. We are focusing on the overall preparation of the team, and specific decisions will be made based on the current situation,” he explained.
Ready for All Outcomes
Ishii highlighted Thailand’s thorough preparation for every possible scenario, including the prospect of a penalty shootout if the aggregate score is tied after 90 minutes. “We have prepared thoroughly for every scenario, including penalties. The team is ready to face any challenge,” he stated confidently.
Midfielder Peeradon Chamratsamee echoed his coach’s sentiments, emphasizing the team’s readiness and thanking the Thai fans for their unwavering support. “We are fully prepared both mentally and physically for tomorrow’s match. The team has been focusing on recovery and tactical preparation to deliver the best performance possible,” Peeradon said. “I want to thank all Thai fans for their unwavering support and love. We will give our all to repay that support with an impressive performance in tomorrow’s match.”
Thailand’s Challenges and Aspirations
Thailand faces a challenging task against a confident Vietnamese side that needs only a draw to claim their third AFF Cup title. The “War Elephants” must win by at least two goals to secure the championship outright, or by one goal to force a penalty shootout.
The stakes are higher than ever as Thailand seeks to reclaim regional glory in front of a packed Rajamangala Stadium. With 50,000 fans expected to fill the stands, the atmosphere will be electric as the hosts aim to overturn the deficit. Meanwhile, Vietnam will look to maintain their advantage and solidify their status as Southeast Asia’s top footballing nation.
The stage is set for a thrilling and decisive encounter, with both teams determined to leave everything on the field in pursuit of the AFF Cup 2024 title.
