Hanoi FC has officially announced Japanese coach Makoto Teguramori as their new head coach. He will take charge of the team starting today, February 17, alongside his South Korean assistant, Lee Chang Yeob. This appointment marks a crucial change in Hanoi FC’s bid to turn their season around and compete for the V-League 2024/2025 title.
After an underwhelming first half of the season, Hanoi FC decided to make a coaching change to strengthen their squad and pursue greater ambitions. Following negotiations, the club and the 1967-born coach reached an agreement, making him the new leader of the capital club.
Makoto Teguramori began his coaching career in 2008 and quickly established himself as a talented manager. He led Vegalta Sendai to the J2 League title in 2009, securing promotion to the J1 League. Under his leadership, the club maintained a stable performance in Japan’s top flight, with their most remarkable achievement being a runner-up finish in the J1 League in 2012—the highest in the club’s history.
In 2016, Teguramori was appointed head coach of Japan’s U23 team, managing future stars such as Wataru Endo, Takumi Minamino, and Takuma Asano. He guided the team to victory in the AFC U23 Championship and secured a spot at the 2016 Olympics.
Since 2022, Teguramori has been coaching in Thailand, leading BG Pathum United and later Chonburi. During this period, he achieved notable success, winning the Thailand Champions Cup in 2022, the Thai League Cup in 2023/2024, and reaching the quarterfinals of the AFC Champions League in 2022.
With a wealth of experience in Asian football and a proven track record, Makoto Teguramori’s arrival at Hanoi FC signals the club’s intent to reclaim dominance in Vietnamese football. His tactical expertise and ability to develop young talent will be crucial in Hanoi FC’s quest for V-League glory in the 2024/2025 season.
