Bundesliga and Vietnam Football Federation (VFF) have extended their strategic partnership through a new Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) that will last until 2028, aiming to build on previous achievements and further elevate the level of football in Vietnam. Under this agreement, the Bundesliga, together with clubs from Germany’s National Championship, will share their expertise in technical coaching, sports science, and medical services with Vietnamese football.
The deal includes extensive exchange programs for coaches and medical staff, while VFF will actively promote these projects among Vietnam’s passionate and growing football community.
This new MoU expands upon the initial agreement signed in March 2022, which focused on improving domestic league structures, club operations, and cultivating a strong football culture among fans. With a broader range of activities now on the agenda, the current agreement is designed to support the sustainable development of football at every level in Vietnam. Among the key initiatives is the Bundesliga Dream project, which aims to enhance the quality of youth teams and help the national side achieve greater success internationally.
Adding further emphasis to the importance of this collaboration, Chairman Tran Quoc Tuan stated, “This is an event of great significance, increasing opportunities for Vietnamese football. It marks the cooperation between Vietnamese football and the German Bundesliga, the world’s leading football league. The Bundesliga’s systematic youth training program provides a model from which Vietnamese football can learn and develop. With notable initiatives, such as the women’s training camp in June 2023 ahead of the World Cup and friendly matches involving teams from Germany, including Frankfurt and Leipzig, we are excited to announce our cooperation with the Bundesliga until 2028. This activity also commemorates 50 years of diplomatic relations between Vietnam and the Federal Republic of Germany, and it is just the beginning of a phase of collaboration that will bring great achievements to the relationship between our two nations.”
Reinforcing this sentiment, Mr. Peer Naubert, Executive Director of Bundesliga, remarked, “Vietnam is a beautiful country with wonderful and sincere people. The Vietnamese are very passionate about football, and I believe that is a strong common ground between us. Since 2022, Bundesliga and Vietnamese football have officially started their cooperative relationship, with numerous activities already underway. From the first youth development project dedicated to the Asian region—the Bundesliga and VFF Talent Incubator—to match viewings, friendly matches, training sessions, and interactions with Bundesliga clubs, we are committed to growing alongside VFF. We will establish a development pathway for young Vietnamese football talents, with the hope that one day they can play in the Bundesliga. We want to continue this growth together.”
Recent collaborative efforts between German and Vietnamese football have already seen success through friendly matches involving teams such as Eintracht Frankfurt, RB Leipzig, and Borussia Dortmund with Vietnamese national teams. These events have contributed to the growth of the sport in Vietnam, a trend highlighted by the national team’s recent Southeast Asian Championship win. Bundesliga’s commitment to the growth of football in Asia is further evidenced by its long-standing support for youth development projects, including the Youth Incubator Project launched in Vietnam in 2022, which laid the groundwork for the Bundesliga Dream initiative. Now in its tenth edition, this project highlights the joint effort to nurture young talent.
Furthermore, the Bundesliga has become a major destination for Asian players, now hosting more Asian footballers than the top five European leagues combined. From pioneers such as Cha Bum-kun and Yasuhiko Okudera to current stars like Kim Min-Jae, Ko Itakura, and Ritsu Doan, the league continues to set high standards. This summer, Kevin Diks is set to become the first Indonesian player—and the sixth from Southeast Asia—to join Borussia Mönchengladbach, following in the footsteps of players from Thailand and Cambodia.
Overall, this renewed MoU represents a robust commitment from both Bundesliga and VFF to the future of Vietnamese football. It promises more opportunities for Vietnamese players to learn from world-class systems and ultimately raises the level of competition across all tiers of the sport, marking the start of a new chapter in the relationship between Vietnam and German football.
