Nguyen Filip unexpectedly withdraws from the national team

Coach Kim Sang Sik has called up another goalkeeper to the Vietnam national team after Nguyen Filip requested to be absent from the March 2025 FIFA Days training camp.

Goalkeeper Filip Nguyen has withdrawn from the Vietnam national team’s March 2025 training camp due to personal reasons. With a family member currently ill, Filip Nguyen is planning to temporarily take a break from football to return home.

His absence is unfortunate, as he is still considered one of the best goalkeepers in Vietnam at the moment. Having not played much in the 2024 ASEAN Cup, Filip Nguyen was expected to put in extra effort to prove himself in the upcoming matches for the national team.

Coach Kim Sang Sik has decided to call up goalkeeper Tran Trung Kien from the Vietnam U22 team as a replacement for Filip Nguyen. Standing at 1.91m, Trung Kien is regarded as one of the most promising young goalkeepers in Vietnamese football.

Trung Kien has been performing consistently for Hoang Anh Gia Lai and has prior experience with the national team setup, having been one of the three registered goalkeepers at the 2024 ASEAN Cup. His call-up will allow the 2003-born goalkeeper to gain more experience training alongside seasoned players.

Filip Nguyen’s absence at this time does not significantly affect Vietnam’s preparations. After an impressive campaign that earned him the Best Goalkeeper award at the 2024 ASEAN Cup, Dinh Trieu has continued to maintain stable form for Hai Phong FC.

Vietnam will play two matches at the end of March, starting with a friendly against Cambodia, followed by a crucial fixture against Laos in the 2027 Asian Cup qualifiers.
